Deerfield High School pole vaulter earns eighth place medal in record seventh state meet.
For Christine Stitcher the seventh time was the charm as one of Deerfield High School’s finest athletes in history closed her prep career with a medal in the pole vault at the State Meet today at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. Last year she wanted to reach statewide competition three times and this term he wanted a medal. She got it today. Christine Stitcher finished 31st in the all-around competition on Friday.
Deerfield High School gymnast Christine Stitcher competed this weekend in the final state championship meet of her high school career, finishing 31st in the all-around competition in Palatine. She finished 30th on the vault and 26th on the uneven parallel bars. Stitcher, also a diver and pole vaulter who will compete in the University of Notre Dame’s pool next year, will end a gymnastics career that has occupied more than two thirds of her young life. It's also the end of an era for her coach, Carol Myers, who will conclude a 34-year run as a coach and teacher at Deerfield High School. Deerfield High School gymnast Christine Stitcher is heading to the state finals. Stitcher qualified at Thursday's section meet to advance on the vault and bars, as well as in the all-around competition, according to Warriors Coach Carol Myers. This is her third trip to the state finals. "Christine struggled in the first half of the meet, falling off the beam and some minor mishaps on floor, but really came through on vault and bars," Myers said. Myers pointed out some other notable performances. "Leslie Ross hit her season high of 8.225 on bars," Myers said. More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J.
