VIDEO: Deerfield Downs HP in Rivalry Rematch

Deerfield and Highland Park boys soccer teams split season series after Warriors score two second half goals in 2-1 victory.

Highland Park handed the Deerfield boys soccer team their first loss of the season two weeks ago in the championship game of the Lake Forest North Shore Shootout.  On Tuesday, the Warriors (8-2, 1-0) handed the Giants (6-3, 0-1) their first conference loss of the season in a rematch of two of the top teams in the CSL North. Highland Park's Andrew Chang gave the Giants an early lead, scoring just over three minutes into the game. However, Deerfield senior goalkeep Josh Norris would hold the Giants in check the rest of the game. Deerfield tied the game when Joey Calistri's pass was deflected by Tristian Pennick into the Highland Park net for an own-goal.  Jason Kayne provided the go-ahead goal for the Warriors in the 51st minute, as he …

SOFTBALL VIDEO: Despite Loss Warriors Continue to Improve

Inexperienced Deerfield softball team starting to come together after tough start to season.

The number of freshman and sophomores on the Deerfield softball team is the same as the number of seniors.  That inexperience has been a factor early in the season, as was the case when they fell to Niles North 16-3 on Thursday. "Everyone seems to know that we're kind of a young team, but we've continued to develop and work with each other," Deerfield senior Paige Frisone said.  "Some teams are a lot more advanced than others and that's what we experienced tonight." Despite the loss, the Warriors have reason to optimistic.  After starting the season 0-9, Deerfield has picked up three wins in their last eight games, averaging 11 runs per game in those three wins.  The offense appears to be finding its swing, as the Warriors (3-14, 2-3) were…

LACROSSE VIDEO: DHS Girl's Program Sees Growth

Warriors see early success in 2011, head lacrosse coach Krista Settles reflects on development.

Deerfield girls lacrosse head coach Krista Settles has been coaching the team since its first year of existence in 2003.  During that time, the Warriors have gone from having one JV team to now fielding full rosters on every level of competition. "This sport has grown a ton in eight years," Settles said.  "We just got a feeder program which will really help our sport and really help our area so that girls will be practicing and playing prior to getting to high school." The vast majority of players Settles has coachED during her eight years have little or no game experience in lacrosse.  Her main goal has been to develop skill and discipline that can be passed down from one class to the next.  Her group of six seniors this year are all on …

VIDEO: Tennis Team Brings High Hopes into 2011

Despite a loss to start the season, the Warriors tennis team has aspirations of finishing top three in state.

The Deerfield boys tennis team knew it would be tough to start its duel meet schedule against Hinsdale Central, a perennial contender which finished second in the state in 2010.  Despite suffering a 6-2 loss to the Red Devils in the season opener, Deerfield has plenty to be optimistic about for the rest of the season. "I think that this (match) gives us a gage," Deerfield Head Coach Josh Leighton said. "One of the things I talked to the guys about afterwards was that this is only April 5th and that we really need to peak towards the end of the season." The Warriors have good reason to believe they will peak by the end of the season.  They return eight players from last year's team that finished sixth in the state.  They also bring back …
