Garrett Endorsement Kicks Off Morrison Campaign

Retiring state senator credits Morrison for keeping taxes low in West Deerfield Township.

West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison officially started her campaign to replace retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) with Garrett’s endorsement before a crowd of more than 50 supporters Thursday at a Deerfield restaurant. No other democrats have declared their candidacy to seek the nomination to succeed Garrett in the March 20 primary. Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman has said he will run as a Republican. I checked Senator Terry Link's web site, www.senatorlink30.com, and could not find mention of Morrison or why Garrett stepped down.   more ›

Dold: Tax Hikes Not Off the Table

Congressman says he's open-minded about debt reduction.

Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) indicated he would not automatically reject any deficit reduction program that includes a tax increase after giving a legislative update to more than 45 people Monday at Highland Park Rotary Club meeting at the Highland Park Country Club.  “I don’t want to put it off the table,” Dold said, adding he preferred not to raise tax rates. “It’s not the right thing to do in the face of this down economy." Dold does not to be as much of a nut case as some of the others who signed that pledge, he did sign though. Walsh signed too. It makes no sense to me why he would sign such a pledge if he honestly wanted to do what is best for his District. He signed it to get elected and now is having to deal with the inflexibility of such a decision. Unless he comes out and clearly denounces the pledge and says…   more ›
