Village Board Approves Deerbrook Changes

Trustees move 240-unit apartment project to next phase. Robert Nadler takes seat as newest member.

Freestanding locations for Starbucks and Subway at the Deerbrook Mall got final unanimous approval by the Village Board of Trustees Monday during its regularly scheduled meeting. Starbucks will be relocated from its inline location into space adjacent to Chase Bank and Subway moves to a new building to be constructed where Devon Bank once stood. The new Starbucks will have a drive-through window. Earlier: Board Prods Deerbrook on Future Plans Before giving Deerbrook its approval, the Board got the answers it was seeking from the developers of a proposed 240-unit apartment project at 1525 Lake Cook Road. It then gave its approval, on a 4-1 vote, to let the developers finalize their proposal with the Plan Commission. When developer AMLI …

Let me start out by saying I am not in favor of this crossing nor the tunnel to nowhere downtown. However, I want the facts out there. The purpose of this crossing is specifically tied to these new apartments. The developer anticipates that a number of the employees of nearby corporations, specifically, Walgreens, will chose to move in these new units, and as a result would be crossing to go to …   more ›

Deerbrook Owners Look to Future

Relocation of Starbucks, Subway is the beginning. Village awaits comprehensive proposal.

Relocation of Starbucks and Subway to freestanding locations at Deerbrook Mall is the beginning of what the Village and shopping center ownership hope will be an all-embracing long term plan to renovate the development. Before mall ownership brings that plan to the Village Board of Trustees, it wants to put certain pieces in place including potential relocation of Jewel and TJ Maxx as well as changes for Starbucks and Subway already on their way to approval after Monday’s Village Board meeting. Earlier: Board Prods Deerbrook on Future Plans “A long term comprehensive plan is what we want for Deerbrook,” Mike Nigro, a source affiliated with mall ownership, said. “Jewel is a big part of this.” He also said giving all stores an outside …

Jon Hall is correct, Deerbrook is archaic, and retail utilization at Deerbrook and Lake Cook Plaza is less than 50%. The Barking Lot and tile store are excuses to fill what would otherwise be perpetually empty space. Both plazas need to be bulldozed and replaced with a mixed use development, while cutting retail space at least 50%, to match today's market. 40 years is an eternity in retail, two …   more ›

Board Prods Deerbrook on Future Plans

Trustees give relocation of Starbucks, Subway green light but want to know more about long range project. Answer may be forthcoming within 90 days.

Owners of the Deerbrook Mall came before the Deerfield Village Board of Trustees Monday seeking minor changes to the shopping center but local officials wanted to know about the status of comprehensive long range plans. After representatives of Deerbrook ownership explained the benefits of relocating Starbucks and Subway to free standing buildings, Mayor Harriet Rosenthal put shopping center management representatives on the spot asking if a previously proposed renovation was ready to move ahead. Earlier: Jewel’s Uncertainty Curbs Deerbrook Enthusiasm Those plans were suspended in August because of the uncertainty arising over the financial condition of the parent company of Jewel. Those issues were resolved last month when new ownership …

They can't even manage their own precious sign ordinances. Now we have the large and tacky Tennaqua banner ad nailed on a yard fence facing Deerfield Road as you come into town. This board is creeping out with petty pretentious overload.   more ›

The Village will operate on a calendar year rather than a fiscal year starting in 2014. Poll Results: Readers Want Theater in Deerfield

Survey shows overwhelming support for making Deerbrook temporary home of Landmark Theater during renovation.

Patch readers expressed strong support for a temporary relocation of Highland Park’s Landmark Theater during a three-month renovation to Deerbrook’s shuttered movie house. Of the 36 readers who responded, 29 want to see the temporary move while seven are opposed, according to an unscientific survey started Feb. 18. Earlier: Should Deerbrook’s Theaters Become Landmark’s Temporary Home Management from Deerbrook has yet to respond to Patch about the suggestion while a spokesperson for Landmark was not able to offer any further information. Meanwhile some readers expressed skepticism about the plan. “If the theatre in downtown HP is a fire hazard and has been open as recently as last year, how will the Deerbrook theatre be ready and able to be…

Should Deerbrook’s Theaters Become Landmark’s Temporary Home?

With Highland Park’s Landmark Renaissance Theaters closing March 8 for renovation, should the movie house make Deerbrook its temporary home?

Highland Park’s Landmark Renaissance Theaters will close March 8 for three months of renovation which will include stadium seating and a dining option with alcohol, according to a source affiliated with the company. The three month hiatus leaves patrons of independent films with the option of going to Evanston or Chicago for that style movie. Could there be a more local option? Get local news in a daily email from Patch. It's like getting a free newspaper. Learn more.  There was a four-screen theater in the Deerbrook Mall that closed over 20 years ago but it is still there. Deerfield Village Board moves to regulate size of temporary business signs in reaction to Rosebud's sign in August. Zoning changes also approved for Lake Cook Road corridor easing burden for Deerbrook.

A move to regulate the size of permissible temporary business signs took its first step forward Tuesday at a regular meeting of the Village Board of Trustees when it agreed to send the project changing Deerfield’s ordinance to the Plan Commission for initial consideration. In other action Monday, the Board approved changes to the Village’s zoning ordinance easing the way for retail businesses to open in the Lake Cook Road corridor and approved an ordinance requiring recycling of debris from construction sites. Maybe they do listen to rational thought, sometimes....Certainly not all the time. I recall one of the board members expressing concern about the Village spending so much money on the Pedistrian underpass.
