Your friendly neighborhood Patch editors will be meeting folks, serving cider and giving out shwag at festivals happening in Glenview and Deerfield this Saturday.
Autumn Festivals are fundamentally different from all other festivals — they're apple flavored and dressed in flannel. Looking for something to do with the family this weekend? Stop by one of the upcoming fall events and revel in the North Shore's autumnal glory. Weather permitting, editors from Glenview will be serving free apple cider at the Wagner Farm event, and rumor has it the Deerfield editor may or may not be teaching folks at Harvest Fest secret North Shore handshakes.

A lot of talk in Deerfield lately surrounds all the closing businesses, school board issues and what's not working in Deerfield. Time to celebrate what is working-the deerfield Farmers Market.
Saturdays so far this summer have been crazy. Softball tournaments, swim meets, baseball games—crazy. But if I had known what I was missing I would have found the time to head to the Deerfield Farmers’ Market before July 21. It was quite the open market experience. Having attended the Deerfield Farmers’ Market in past years, there have always been the expected fruits, vegetables, flowers and a few baked goods with an interesting vendor or two. But this year offers truly a vast array of options that was surprising, exciting and has me planning my purchases for next week already! Now, our farmers market is not organic or French or any of those other "fancy" markets that are offered in neighboring towns. But, the Deerfield Farmers’ Market has…

Civic groups join vendors selling fruits, vegetables and other wares.
While the Deerfield Farmer’s Market is stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables of the season, the community element of the event was on display Saturday. Each week one or more booths are reserved for civic groups, according to event coordinator Joan Reed. In the past, church, school and community organizations have taken a turn communicating their message. Earlier: Deerfield Farmers’ Market Has Something for All This week it was the Deerfield Community Nursery School as Director Diane Moyano staffed the booth with colleagues Kathy Kaczkowski of Arlington Heights and Kim Engler of Northbrook. “We’re here to provide information on the school, keep people hydrated and have fun,” Moyano said. If people wanted a chance to visit with Mayor …

Shoppers at the Deerfield Farmers’ Market were surprised and delighted with what they found from unique vegetables to dog treats at the initial event Saturday. One of the pleased shoppers was Susie Wexler of Deerfield. She just found cucumbers to make pickles at one vendor’s stand when she came upon the domain of Prairie View farmer Tim Frillman. Earlier: Crowds Flock to Farmers’ Market Opening “Where did you get that fresh dill,” Wexler asked Frillman? “How weird to find fresh dill and cucumbers so soon.” Frillman displayed a number of lettuces along with other vegetables and herbs. He plans to be a regular at the market all summer. “I’m the most local one,” he said of his location approximately six miles away. When event coordinator Joan…

Saturday event thriving in 17th season; features vegetables called Patty Pans and popcorn that won't stick in your teeth.
Since 1995, the Deerfield Farmers Market has been serving local residents with the freshest fruits and vegetables from around the area and this season is no exception. "This year, the market has been really good," said Jonathan Jeffrey, an employee of Walt Skibbe Farms from Eau Claire, MI. "Last year it rained on us a lot but it's really picking up this year. We haven't had any issues and we've been selling out of almost everything since the market started." Local residents have been flooding the market on Saturday mornings, taking advantage of a wide variety of food choices. Related: Fresh From Their Family Farm to Your Front Door. "We're here pretty much every week," Deerfield resident Stuart Shayman said. "I really think the variety of …

Jason Price wins contest, photo now on display.
It’s that time of year again. When vendors of all kinds flock to Deerfield to sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to cheeses, baked goods and nuts. With the Deerfield Farmers Market right around the corner, the village debuted this year’s poster that will be marketing it. “It was a very difficult contest,” Deerfield Farmers Market organizer Joan Reed announced at the village board’s last meeting earlier this month. It was the second year Deerfield held a poster design contest. “We had a lot of very exciting pieces of art,” Reed commented. Out of all the pieces submitted, Deerfield High School student Jason Price’s photograph was selected as this year’s winner. “I took the picture and then I dropped in all the fonts and …
