Deerfield High School gymnasts, badminton team show prowess at State Finals.
Brian Spinello won two gymnastics medals at the State Meet Saturday at Lincoln-Way East High School in Frankfurt to turn in the best Deerfield High School performance out of nine athletes who were part of state tournaments in gymnastics and badminton over the weekend. Spinello took fifth place on floor exercise with a 9.55 score and 10th on the parallel bars with an 8.95. He began the final round in ninth place on floor with a 9.3 and improved in the finals. On the parallel bars, he had a 9.1 in the preliminaries and was in 10th as well. A junior, Spinello qualified for State in two events last year but did not make the finals. Volleyball team breezes to York Invitational title.
Brian Spinello and Jeff Spinello qualified for three events each in the State Gymnastics Meet in today’s Sectional at Mundelein while Jack Schneider, Alex Cimaglia and Robert Suszek will compete in one each. May 4 Gymnastics The Final Score: 1. Mundelein 152.75, 2. Buffalo Grove 150.7, 3. Palatine 135.25, 4. Fremd 135, 5. Deerfield 133.6. Boys’ track team finishes fourth at Spartan Relays.
April 26 A true twin effort paved the way for the Deerfield High School gymnastics team’s fourth place finish in the Central Suburban Conference Meet Friday at Glenbrook North. The twins—Jeff and Brian Spinello—are identical Warriors who finished fifth (Jeff) and sixth (Brian) in the all around competition while adding a number of other individual medals. Rain and cold have caused more cancellations than games played for baseball and softball teams.
What difference a year makes. A year ago the Deerfield High School baseball team was playing in 80-degree weather during spring break at Adams Field while the softball team was doing the same in Florida. The baseball team has an 8-5-14 record with the 14 being the number of games cancelled or postponed because of rain or cold, according to the school website. Warrior baseball Coach Kevin Marsh, who has been leading teams in the area for 21 years, remembers few seasons like 2013 but minimizes the effect on the team. One gymnastics team for years, Deerfield High School defeats Highland Park in first meeting between the two. Warrior Lacrosse squad downs Giants as well.
For years, Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools joined forces in boys’ gymnastics to field a coop team and it regularly placed well in the State Meet. This season, the program grew strong enough for each school to have its own squad which meant the District 113 rival would be opponents rather than teammates for the first time. In the first competition between the two, the Warriors outpointed the Giants, 122.75 to 101.5, in a quadrangular meet at Maine East. Both teams finished ahead of the Blue Demons and Maine South. Though they compete as separate teams, the Warriors have one thing in common, Head Coach Doug Foerch. The arrangement is unique. He was the long time mentor of the joint program. Warriors Star Performers: John Harlan logged eight kills, three aces including nine points off his serve, four digs and a pair of blocks. Jordan Fine added 18 assists, six digs, three aces and two blocks while Jake Brody had 18 digs. Deerfield High School three-sport athlete Christine Stitcher ends gymnastics career in State Finals as Coach Carol Myers ends 34-year coaching career for Warriors.
When Deerfield High School three-sport athlete Christine Stitcher competes in the State Meet today in Palatine coached by Coach Carol Myers, it will be a farewell performance for both. Stitcher, also a diver and pole vaulter who will compete in the University of Notre Dame’s pool next year, will end a gymnastics career that has occupied more than two thirds of her young life.
