Three Deerfield High School wrestlers compete in State Finals starting Thursday.
A winning philosophy adopted by the three Deerfield High School wrestlers competing in the State Meet which opens today at Champaign’s Assembly Hall may make the difference between a championship and a consolation prize Andrew Mehrholz (106 pounds), Ari Sapinsley (152) and Jim Kirby (195) carry the Warrior hopes into the tournament which lasts through Saturday. Three Deerfield High School wrestlers qualified for state at a sectional tournament in Barrington last weekend.
Three Deerfield High School wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament this past weekend after placing third at the Barrington sectional meet, according to IHSA results. The Deerfield High School wrestling team will compete in an important meet at Lake Zurich on Saturday, Feb. 2. The top three individuals will advance into sectionals at Barrington next weekend. The team champion moves on to face the winner of the Grant Sectional with the winner going to the team State Finals, according to Deerfield Coach Marc Pechter. Deerfield High School will face off against Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Cary-Grove, Highland Park, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Palatine and Stevenson. The Warriors are currently ranked 18th in the State, according to Illinois Matmen, followed by Barrington at 19 and Cary Grove at 20. Deerfield High School takes time out before recent wrestling meet to honor 11 senior athletes, a score keeper and a pair of hall of fame inductees.
Jim Coleman and Dru Meshes became the latest members of the Deerfield High School Wrestling Hall of Fame Thursday. Learn more. Coleman wrestled with injury—seven knee surgeries—as much as opponents during his time as an athlete at Deerfield and the University of Michigan. As a senior he finished third at the State Meet despite competing “on one leg” during his semifinal and third-place matchs, according to current Coach Marc Pechter. Jan.12 Hockey The Final Score: Deerfield 10, Highland Park 2 Warriors Star Performers: Mason Rosenberg scored four goals and Henri Beaudion had a hat trick with three. Beaudion also had two assists and Rosenberg added one. Other Notable Warrior Performances: Spenser Delman added two goals and four assists while Mike Wiggemansen contributed a goal.
