District 109 May Reinstate French

Part time teacher sought to instruct two classes.

Responding to an outpouring of interest from students, parents and community members, Deerfield Public Schools District 109 will make an effort to restore the study of French for incoming sixth graders at Caruso and Shepard Middle Schools. After the District announced in April it would suspend French as a foreign language offered for incoming sixth graders and teach only Spanish, more than 30 people came to a Board of Education meeting April 29 to ask for reconsideration. The District plans to conduct a study next year to determine whether to offer French in the future, Earlier: District 109 Remove French From 6th Grade Curriculum The Board responded at its meeting Monday by saying the District is looking for a part time teacher to …

Oh, cool. So let's hire 10 different language teachers to have on staff so we can say that we're offering languages. Then our property values will skyrocket.   more ›

Readers Tell District 109 To Restore French

Response to Patch poll seeking opinion on District 109’s decision to eliminate French next is light but clear.

When Deerfield Public Schools District 109 chose to suspend French as one of the two foreign languages offered to students at Shepard and Caruso Middle Schools in the coming term, more than 40 people came to the April 29 Board of Education meeting to protest. Spanish will be taught to all incoming sixth graders. Earlier: Should District 109 Restore French to Curriculum In the stories Patch published on the issue, at least 64 reader comments were written expressing reasons to retain the program or agreeing with the Board’s decision to suspend it and study the outcome in the coming school year. Of the 16 people who responded to the unscientific survey, 14 wanted French offered to incoming sixth graders and two do not. One reason the District…

As someone who has no dog in this race, it does seem odd that one language that has a more than twice as many students as two other languages is the one that is cut.   more ›

Should District 109 Restore French to Curriculum?

Suspension of French from world language program has caused stir with some families.

A decision that will not give incoming sixth graders at Caruso and Shepard Middle Schools the option of learning French or Spanish in the coming school year as they have in the past has stirred debate in the community and on Patch. Patch wants to know what the community thinks and we are taking an unscientific poll to find out what our readers would have Deerfield Public Schools District 109 do. Earlier: Why Did 109 Suspend French Program From their comments to previous articles, Patch readers have had no shortage of opinions on the subject with views coming from all sides of the discussion. One reader, Patricia Reese, feels the suspension will hurt not only middle school students but those at Deerfield High School as well. “Suspending the…

Why Did 109 Suspend French Program?

Amid community protest, Deerfield District 109 suspends French program because of sagging interest and scheduling.

When the community embraced a block scheduling program for Caruso and Shepard Middle Schools in November as a way to create a more intimate relationship between students and teachers, no one realized incoming sixth graders would not be offered French. The block scheduling program along with sagging interest in the subject and an added burden on teachers were given at the Deerfield Public Schools District Board of Education meeting Monday as reasons to suspend and study how best to teach foreign language. Earlier: 109 Restructures Middle School Program A diminished interest in learning French was not obvious at the meeting are between 30 and 40 parents, students, former students and community members came to let the Board know their …

More than 30 community members peppered the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education with questions and comments Monday protesting the suspension of French classes for incoming sixth graders minutes after three newly elected members took their seats. In a meeting that was scheduled to be more procedural than anything else, retiring Board members Ellen London, Deborah Muller and Michael Rosenbaum bid the District farewell. Earlier: District 109 Removes French From 6th Grade Curriculum Then Sari Montgomery, Scott Kluge and Katie Bittner, who were elected April 9, took their seats before the oath of office was administered to all seven current members. Hi Corey- Thanks for the reply. I Just want to clarify what I wrote since some things were left out. On the playground, the lingua franca will continue to be English. At home, yes, the immigrant hispanics will use Spanish. As their command of English grows though as they go through school, this will be less necessary. As a society we should always strive toward learning new skills, including …   more ›

District 109 Removes French From 6th Grade Curriculum

Incoming sixth graders will learn Spanish rather than choose between the two languages.

Spanish will be the only foreign language offered to incoming sixth graders at Caruso and Shepard Middle Schools in next year, according to a report from Superintendent Renee Goier at Monday’s Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education meeting. In the past, students have had the choice of taking French or Spanish in middle school. After teachers and staff met with the Deerfield High School language department, they decided to offer only Spanish for the coming term and take that time to study the impact of the change. I'll say this now to all new board members, and I have said it before: The incoming board MUST be willing to re evaluate every desision made by this out going superintendent and board made this year and in particular these last 3 months.... those involving personnel hirings and appointments as well as expenditures. They must have the courage to nullify or reverse those desicions and selections …   more ›
