Police Blotter: Rented Grill Swiped From Lawn

Officers also report a car parked in a driveway has a window shattered.

A local police department provided the following report. In all incidents where an arrest occurred, a charge is merely an accusation and not evidence of guilt. Theft: On Sept. 12, police responded to the 1200 block of Woodruff to investigate a theft. The homeowner told officers that a grill rented from Highwood Party Rental had been removed from her lawn on the evening of Sept. 11. According to the resident, she was instructed to put the grill next to the curb for pickup by the company. The grill, valued at $700, was swiped before the company could retrieve it. Intoxicated Customer Spits Racial Slur at Jewel Worker

Man has second encounter with police within 2 weeks that results in an arrest.

On Sept. 6, police pulled into Jewel's parking lot after they witnessed a man who appeared intoxicated yelling at another male outside the store, who later turned out to be the store manager. The employee told officers that Nicholas Thomas had been asked to leave the supermarket after personnel refused to sell him beer. The store manager said Thomas was extremely drunk and got upset about the incident and yelled, “Go back to f------ Mexico,” and then used a racial slur. The manager told officers that he could feel Thomas’s spit hitting his face while he yelled at him. Police arrested the 51-year-old man, who they say is known to sleep under the tollway, for disorderly conduct and criminal trespass to property. His court date is Oct. 27. …

Cars Burglarized in Hyatt Parking Lot

Drivers return to find windows smashed and items stolen.

Police responded to two car burglaries in the parking lot of Deerfield’s Hyatt Hotel on Sept. 10. One driver from Evanston told officers that he found a window shattered and several pieces of luggage had been swiped from inside his car. One of the stolen backpacks included his 22-year-old son’s books for school and a new MP3 player. Meanwhile, a woman, who was in town from Pennsylvania for a wedding, also reported her rental car burglarized around the same time. The 57-year-old female said her window was smashed and several electronic items, including a flat-screen monitor and two cameras, were stolen. Police notified Hyatt personnel about the incidents.    

Police Blotter: 3 DUI and 2 Drug Arrests

A hit-and-run accident is among the calls that resulted in charges.

Hit and Run:  Deerfield police responded to a hit-and-run incident near the corner of Techny and Shermer roads on Sept 5. Northbrook police, who were already at the scene when Deerfield officers arrived, had stopped the vehicle. During questioning, authorities said 20-year-old Cristina Paz smelled of burned cannabis. During a search of the Chicago resident’s car, police discovered marijuana and drug paraphernalia inside. Paz was charged with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and improper lane usage. She’s due in court on Oct. 5. Drunk Driving: Ben Boris Schwartz, 59, of Highland Park, was charged with driving under the influence on Sept. 3. According to police, Schwartz …

Police Blotter: McDonald's Employee Assaulted

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department.

Battery: Nicholas Thomas, 51, of Northbrook, was arrested on Aug. 27 by police near the McDonald's along Waukegan Road. An employee told officers she was mopping the floors around 9 p.m. when Thomas slapped her on the butt and then fled on a bicycle. Thomas, who police say is known to sleep under the tollway, was charged with battery. His court date is Sept. 26. Theft: Police responded to the parking lot of Red Roof Inn in response to a car burglary on Aug. 28. The driver told officers he had parked his 2004 GMC box truck in the lot for the night. Cars Burglarized During Soccer Tournament

Some items are recovered from a trash bin after windows are smashed at Brickyards Park.

A slew of cars parked at Brickyards Park were burglarized on Aug. 28 while a soccer tournament was taking place nearby. When police showed up around 6:45 p.m., three drivers told officers their vehicles had been broken into. A 53-year-old Deerfield woman reported her car window was smashed and a laptop stolen. A 70-year-old Evanston woman told police her daughter’s car window had also been broken and a Coach purse with $400 cash inside was missing. A 44-year-old Highland Park woman reported her purse with $300 cash was taken after the car's window was smashed.  A few hours later, Deerfield police were contacted by the Lake County Forest Preserve Police with a tip about the possible whereabouts of the missing items. 19-year-old Tries to Flee Cops During Arrest

Beer can prompts Deerfield police to confront group after-hours at park.

Police were on patrol near Maplewood Park around 1 a.m. June 25 when they spotted five cars in the parking lot and a beer can thrown on the ground nearby. While running the vehicles' license plates, officers said a group of five females approached the cars from a home in the 900 block of Alden Court. The officers then approached the group. According to the police report, the group of teenagers told officers no one had been drinking and didn't know anything about the beer can on the ground. Police checked the females for indications of intoxication, reporting that Bridget O'Brien and Marie Smiley, both 19 and Deerfield residents, showed signs of being drunk and their breath smelled of alcohol.  Officers asked the two detained teens to take …

They are good people, and just like every other teenager in Deerfield, they were partying, and enjoying their summer home from college. They just happened to be the unlucky ones who got caught. Police Blotter: Officers Arrest Two for Drunk Driving

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department.

Drunk Driving:  Jose Tellez-Cuevas, 44, of Highwood, was charged on June 16 with a DUI. Police say Tellez-Cuevas was spotted driving in the curb lane on Waukegan Road and was pulled over. Authorities say his ID card from Mexico was not a valid drivers license. After failing a field sobriety test, Tellez-Cuevas was charged with improper lane usage, no valid drivers license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and DUI. His court date is scheduled for July 13. --- While responding to another radio call, a Deerfield police officer activated his emergency lights. Police Blotter: Prince Williams Arrested on Violation; Driver Busted on Drug Charge

The following incidents were reported by the Deerfield Police Department.

Drunken Driving Kelsey Muldon, 23, of Deerfield, was charged with a driving under the influence on May 8. When police pulled her over for speeding on Waukegan Road, they smelled the odor of alcohol. Muldon registered .182 on the breath test. Her court date is May 25. Drug Bust  Xavier Garcia, 22, of Wheeling, was charged with possession of marijuana on May 2. Officers pulled over Garcia's vehicle after it made an illegal turn into Deerbrook Mall. Police later discovered a digital scale in his possession as well as a plastic baggy containing a green leafy substance inside a gym bag. Garcia's court date is June 16.  Graffiti Police responded to a malicious mischief complaint at Maplewood Park on May 10. Officers discovered graffiti spray …
