Village Honors Hockey Team with New Entrance Signs

Plaques into Deerfield recognize high school team as state champs.

Deerfield’s got something new to brag about. The village is now home to a state championship winning hockey team and officials want to make sure everybody knows about it. In April, the village board surprised the players with a plaque that read “Home of the 2010-2011 Deerfield High School Varsity White Division State Champion Hockey Team.” While the players got to keep that sign, others have now been placed at some of the village’s entrances.  “It’s very exciting to have this team with us,” Mayor Harriet Rosenthal enthusiastically remarked at the board meeting. “I happen to have a grandson on this hockey team that won state in their division.” “This year we had a very good end of the season,” senior Jacob Serck said after receiving the …

VIDEO: Warriors Move on to Semifinals of Blackhawk Cup

Marc Pagano and Sam Rogers scored two goals each to propel Deerfield past Carmel in the quarterfinals of the AHAI Blackhawk Cup.

The Deerfield hockey team is picking the perfect time to play its best hockey.  After going 10-18-3 in the regular season, the Warriors are now 7-0-1 in post season play after topping Carmel 7-4 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Blackhawk Cup State Tournament (White Varsity Division). "You always hope a team's going to peak at the right time and that's what they've done," Deerfield Head Coach Chuck Rinaldo said.  "They've always had it in them.  They've always had the opportunity to play well and win the big games.  It's just a matter of doing at the right time." VIDEO: Deerfield Goalie Registers Best Stats in Conference

Three-year varsity player Jordan Shirley leads Metro North in ice time, saves.

There may not be a hockey team in the Metro North Conference that relies on one player as much as the Deerfield Warriors rely on their goalie.  Senior Jordan Shirley has been between the pipes for 19 of their 20 conference games, logging 839 minutes of ice-time, more than any other goalie in the league. Not only is he on the ice all the time, he's always making an impact.  Shirley has faced a league-high 627 shots this season and has made a league-high 549 saves.  "You just build off of every save," Shirley said.  "You get more confidence.  You make one save and you just tell yourself you're going to make the next save.  They can't score on you." Shirley has recorded three games with 39 saves as well as one shutout this season for the …

Wolves Goalie Scores Big with Deerfield Readers

Kids pack library to meet Peter Mannino.

Chicago Wolves fans are used to seeing him in front of the goal but Thursday Peter Mannino stepped off the ice and into the Deerfield Public Library. “Read a book and then go skate,” was the hockey player’s message to youngsters. The special visit was part of the Wolves' Read to Succeed Program. Players travel around the Chicagoland area encouraging kids to spend more time in the library. “I remember having my cool little library card,” the 26-year old goaltender said. “There’s time for video games, time for friends. But you have to make time for reading; it will pay off in the end.” Words of wisdom Deerfield kids patiently listened to before shooting the American Hockey League player their own questions like “What do you do after the game…
