Warrior Wrestlers Dominate Antioch Invitational

Deerfield High School girls’ basketball team falls to Evanston.

Nov. 24  Wrestling  The Final Score:        1. Deerfield 328.5, 2. Antioch 258, 3. Hersey 234, 4. Aurora West 229.5, 5. Grayslake Central 175.  Warriors Star Performers:  J.J. Nawrot (Heavyweight), Chase Hanua (182), Ari Sapinsley (152), Brian McCann (145), Brian Spinello (126) and Andrew Mehrholz were individual champions.  Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Patrick Johnson (220), Jim Kirby (195), Thom Bonadies (160), Brady Glantz (138) and Jordan Lieberman earned runner up honors while third place finishes went to Colton Emmerich (170), Jeff Spinello (132) and Joey Bloom (120). VIDEO: Deerfield Duo Capture Sectional Titles, Get Ready for State

Deerfield seniors Lenny Bloom and Artie Bess will head to the state wrestling tournament for the second straight year after capturing individual titles at the class 3A Barrington Sectional on Saturday

Lenny Bloom and Artie Bess will represent Deerfield at the state wrestling tournament for the second straight year after they both captured sectional titles in their respective weight classes Saturday in Barrington. "They both had outstanding performances," Deerfield Head Coach Mark Pechter said.  "This is a grueling sectional and they both had to wrestle well and they did.  They stepped it up when they needed to." At 145 pounds, Bloom racked up a 38-1 record this season and is currently ranked 8th in the state by illinoismatmen.com.  He cruised through regional and sectional competition, topping Buffalo Groves Jordan Rathje (ranked 9th in the state) 7-4 in the sectional championship match. VIDEO: Seven Deerfield Wrestlers Advance to Sectionals

Bloom and Bess capture regional titles; five other wrestlers move on to sectionals.

After finishing second at last year's regional tournament, Deerfield wrestlers Lenny Bloom and Artie Bess took home titles at Saturday's Deerfield regional. Bloom improved to 37-1 on the year, defeating Lake Zurich's Alex Nigro in the championship bout (dec 11-2).  Bloom qualified for his third trip to sectionals.  Bess won the regional title at 215 pounds, picking up his 32nd win of the year, a 6-2 decision over Hersey's Jason Olson. Other sectional qualifiers for the Warriors included seniors Spencer Zimmerman (130) and Alec Gutman (125) and juniors Keven Hoogheem (103), Christian Hoogheem (112), and Tyler Pohn (160). VIDEO: Deerfield Wrestlers Claim 3rd Straight CSL North Title

Convincing win over rival Highland Park gives Warriors perfect record in CSL North.

The Deerfield wrestling team had already wrapped up a share of the Central Suburban League North title.  But Friday's 54-12 win over Highland Park meant the title was all theirs. The Warriors claimed the conference crown for the third straight season. On senior night, Deerfield got pins from both its senior captains.  Kyle Friedman (189) improved to 5-0 individually in CSL North action by pinning Luis Toled0.  Spencer Zimmerman (135) pinned Jose Garcia-Gonzeles in 1:42 and helped the Warriors improve to 16-1 on the season. Deerfield, ranked 25th in the state by illinoismatmen.com, also received pins from juniors Lenny Bloom ((140) ranked 10th by illinoismatmen.com, Keven Hoogheem (103), Christian Hoogheem (112), and Tyler Pohn (160).  …

VIDEO: Twin Wrestlers Separate Weight to Take Down Competition

Deerfield duo figures out key to high school success on the mat.

Deerfield wrestlers Keven and Christian Hoogheem are identical twins, similar in every area, nearly impossible to tell apart.  But the juniors have finally figured out gaining one difference may be what helps them both succeed individually. Since 7th grade, Keven and Christian have been competing against one another on the wrestling mat.  The lightweights continued that trend last year when they both wrestled in the 112-pound weight class.   However, being the same weight also meant only one of them could be on the mat in any given match.  This year, the brothers agreed that Keven would drop down to 103 pounds, and neither one seems to be regretting the decision. Christian has posted a 17-5 record this season, including eight pins.  Keven …
