DHS Students Act to Help Planet

Earthworks group at Deerfield High School subtly lets people know what they can do.

Anyone dropping people off or picking them up at Deerfield High School for the last eight years has been given a subtle message about protecting the environment from Earthworks, a student group at the institution. There are signs cautioning people about the negative effects of idling a car. “Clean Air Counts,” reads the marker. “Make a visible difference. I am a big fan of Earthworks! I sit on the Village of Deerfield's Sustainability Commission, and they have been enthusiastic contributors to our efforts at promoting sustainability within the village. DHS Students Clean Up for a Day

Earthworks members clean up Glencoe Beach a part of Adopt-A-Beach program.

A group of 27 young people from Earthworks, an organization of Deerfield High School students, went to the beach Sept. 15 in Glencoe but it was not for fun and games, according to a news release from Township High School District 113. The students were there to clean up the Glencoe Beach as part of the Adopt-A-Beach program sponsored by the Alliance for the Great Lakes. They did more than clean as they collected water samples and other data for scientific purposes. The information goes to the Alliance for further study. Not only do the students from Earthworks clean up the Glencoe Beach twice a year, they demonstrate their passion for the environment by collecting recyclables throughout the school and increasing awareness including America…
