LIVEBLOG: Follow Along with Local Readers for the Presidential Debate Town Hall

Tuesday's round two between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney is Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. Central Time. The town-hall style debate will be moderated by CNN’s Candy Crowley. Patch will liveblog the event for local readers.

The second presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney is set for 8 p.m. Oct. 16. The debate is at Hofstra University in New York and will be moderated by CNN's Candy Crowley. In the first debate, the candidates focused on domestic issues, including the economy and taxes, health care reform and the role of government.  This second debate between the candidates is a town hall-style debate, including questions from the audience. It will focus on both domestic and international issues and will include questions from voters.  The tradition of holding live town hall debates for presidential candidates began in 1992 and has since proved to be one of the biggest challenges for debaters. Taking questions from the …

The Reason Rick Santorum Downplays His Illinois Ties

Letter to the Editor.

The Illinois Republican primary should have a been a triumphant homecoming of sorts for the Santorum for President campaign. After all, the former Pennsylvania Senator briefly attended and graduated from Mundelein’s Carmel Catholic High School in north suburban Lake County. His chief Illinois backer is Al Salvi, a former state representative and failed U.S. Senate candidate who is not only a fellow Carmel graduate, but whose family’s wealthy trial lawyer fortune paid for the Carmel gymnasium that bears the Salvi name.  Santorum “supporters” created a “Carmel High School for Santorum” Facebook page, (apparently moderated by Salvi family members) that touts Santorum as model Carmel graduate who “embodies everything that true practicing …

Jewish Republicans See Obama as 1-Termer

Chapter labels president as anti-Israel as it weighs GOP prospects at Skokie gathering.

Between analyzing the electoral prospects of Republican presidential candidates and ridiculing the "level of mental illness among liberal Jews," members of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) gathered in Skokie last week to discuss how they could help defeat President Obama in 2012. The standing-room only crowd came from throughout Illinois to fill a conference room at Holiday Inn, where they listened to political analysts and Republican scholars offer political red meat against Obama, whom one speaker accused of being "more pro-Palestinian than the Palestinians." Michael Menis, president of RJC's Chicago chapter, told Skokie Patch that his group was alarmed at Obama's policies toward Israel. "There's concern in the Jewish community as …

Teenagers Vote No on Voting

Students are taught how important it is to vote yet in this election a Deerfied High senior wonders why more of his peers didn't cast their ballots.

When the Deerfield Patch editor called me and asked me to write about the election, I decided to write about my peers who were fortunate enough to be 18-years-old by Tuesday. I decided to write about the lucky minority of high school students who were able to vote. In history classes we talk about the right to vote and regard it so highly. Voting is the foundation of our government and is at the core of being an American. Who would pass up an opportunity to have a part in this noble tradition and crucial process? Most of my classmates who can vote elected not to. I was shocked to learn this. Yet as I went around asking who was 18 and who had voted, the most common answer I heard was, "I just didn't register." Other common reasons teens …

As Results Pour In, Clerk's Office Reports Smooth, Efficient Work

Less than three hours after polls closed, the Cook County Clerk has reported 90 percent of voting results.

As election results flowed in throughout the evening, Cook County Clerk David Orr's office offered timely updates on their website and in their Chicago office. Reporters gathered in Orr's office from local media outlets including WGN, ABC, NBC, CBS, the Chicago Tribune, and the Chicago Sun-Times. Offering unofficial results on scrolling screens and hard copies, the office was busy throughout the evening. Orr – who was also up for re-election – continued to work as the results came in.  In less than three hours after the polls closed, Orr's office reported 90 percent of its returns, something that he called a "great thing." As results filtered in, the office experienced efficient reporting. Initial estimates indicate an expected voter …
