Science fair and geography winners recognized at Board meeting after reception for Ellen London, Debbie Muller and Michael Rosenbaum.

Award winning students and outgoing Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education members were the focus Monday’s Board meeting at Shepard Middle School. Before the meeting, the District held a reception to honor Board President Ellen London along with members Debbie Muller and Michael Rosenbaum. All chose not to run for another term April 9. At the meeting, science fair winners were recognized for their achievements as well as Justin Bank, who placed 25th in the State Geography Bee. Air Conditioning in 109 Schools Gets Closer

District 109 Board will get proposal in January. Superintendent search is narrowed to three candidates.

Air conditioning at the Village’s elementary and middle schools got closer to reality based on a committee report given Monday at the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education meeting. The committee discussed a number of proposals and will have a complete presentation for the Board at its January meeting. The project will likely be completed over two summers but could be done to start the 2013-14 school year, according to Board member Steve Schwartz. Earlier: 109 Superintendent Profile, Process Emerges “It’ a two-year plan but there is a chance it can be done in one. We’ll start with the two-story buildings,” Schwartz said. “We’ll present a proposal to the Board in January and we anticipate it will go through.” The cost of …

109 Board Includes Public in Superintendent Search

Consultants offer portrait of ideal candidate to replace retiring Renee Goier.

A consensus was reached by the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education at its meeting Monday to have eight to 12 members of the public included in a confidential interview process to hire a replacement for Superintendent Renee Goier who retires June 30. The Board had been split on the issue of allowing anyone but the elected members to offer input because it could reduce the potential applicant pool. After a presentation by consultants Hank Gmitro and Kim Perkins, reluctant officials changed their mind. Earlier: District 109 Superintendent Search Moves Ahead Gmitro and Perkins told the Board a small group with each member signing a confidentiality agreement would not likely reduce the applicant pool though a public meeting…

What a shame some of the current board had to be "convinced" that including community representatives was a good idea. Just another reason the board should have been replaced prior to selecting a new superintendent.   more ›

Deerfield Parents Raise Concerns Over Special Ed

District 109 President Ellen London said some special education information cannot be legally disclosed.

The Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education is moving forward with its search for a replacement for retiring Superintendent Renee Goier, but parent Barry Grossman is still urging them to reconsider. Grossman, who is continuing to collect signatures for a petition asking the board to hire an interim leader until after the April election, pointed out at Monday’s meeting the board hired interim staff members this school year to fill vacancies caused by the resignation of the assistant superintendent for learning and the special education program coordinator. Earlier: District 109 Superintendent Search Move Forward “I want to thank you,” Grossman said. “This warms my heart to find that you're taking advice of most of the …

Here is the thing...we all know that this board and upper administration are doing whatever they want to do! They won't and haven't listened to faculty and parents in any of the recent hires. The new principal at Caruso was the asst principal from Shepard, the new asst principal for Shepard is a former teacher at Caruso, and the only hire outside of the district was the student services …   more ›

Opinion: Step Back 109 Board of Education

Hasn't this year of teacher negotiations, public spin and us vs. them attitude been enough? It is time for the District 109 Board of Education to take a step back in hiring a new Superintendent-and fast.

Let's be clear. I have signed the petition. I have signed the petition put out by the Deerfield Parents for Change asking the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education to either appoint an interim superintendent for 2013-2014 or start a search for a new superintendent but not finalize a hire until the new Board members are seated next spring. Board President Ellen London has stated it would be irresponsible to wait in hiring a new Superintendent. "We have a fiduciary duty, moral duty and legal duty to do so," she said. It is my position that this Board has a duty to finally listen to the residents of Deerfield. This past year of public teacher negotiations, public spin, divisive Board of Education meetings, parents, …

109 Parents Ask Delay of Goier Replacement

Petition drive asks 109 to wait until new board is seated in April. Interviews of search firms to find new superintendent will be public Monday.

A petition drive began Sunday by a group of Deerfield Public Schools District 109 parents to influence the Board of Education to delay hiring a replacement for retiring Superintendent Renee Goier until after the April election. Though Board President Ellen London maintains the members will follow the normal course of a search because they have a duty to do so, she said Monday part of the process has already been opened to the public. Earlier: Update: Superintendent Search To Ramp Up As soon as the Board announced Goier will retire at the end of the 2012-13 school year, it said it would interview search firms in closed session Monday. It has now decided to make those interviews part of the meeting open to the public. “There is no reason not…

A fiduciary duty refers to making certain the financials of the District are handled properly. If one of the Asst. Superintendents can't handle the financial aspects of the District while the Superintendent is absent - then you've already got huge problems. A moral duty? Not unless you buy into the concept that without a Superintendent for a few months the whole District will descend into immoral…   more ›
