Community will gather Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Deerfield to raise money for PADS.
Do not be surprised when you see a cardboard city built on the grounds of Deerfield’s First Presbyterian Church Saturday. The structures will be part of SleepOut for Shelter organized by the church’s senior youth group at 7 p.m. Saturday to raise awareness for the homeless and money for PADS Lake County, an organization which provides assistance to those who are homeless and not self sufficient. All participants in the event will build cardboard shelters and create fleece blankets while children will be able to take part is awareness activities geared to youngsters. Task force will see first drawings next month with a public open house to follow in November.
Sketches of a pedestrian and environmentally friendly plan for what the Village has dubbed the Northwest Quadrant of downtown Deerfield will be ready for public viewing by the middle of November, according to Principal Planner Jeff Ryckart. The Village decided a little over a year ago to develop a master plan for the area bounded by Deerfield Road on the south, Waukegan Road on the east, Hazel Avenue on the north and the railroad tracks on the west. “We want to make use of the open space as a place for people to walk, bike and enjoy,” Village Trustee Tom Jester said. Deerfield church raises funds for hospital in West Africa.
The First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield opened its doors to holiday shoppers on Saturday for a fundraising event hosted by Friends of Atebubu. Shoppers were invited to browse a colorful selection of handmade jewelry, scarves, bags, decorations, and a delicious spread of baked goods. Proceeds from the Holiday Marketplace are going towards building a new kitchen at Atebubu's Regional Hospital; which will be the first of its kind at the medical facility. After two mission trips to Ghana, Friends of Atebubu was formed in 2007 by Suzy Carroll; a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Deerfield. West Deerfield Township accepts unopened candy to provide treats to the area's underprivileged children. "We collect pounds and pounds of unopened candy every year," said Julie Morrison, West Deerfield Township supervisor. "We donate it to Nicasa in North Chicago where it is distributed to children of women enrolled in one of Nicasa's programs." Nicasa was originally founded in 1966. The organization focuses on substance abuse prevention and treatment and has seven centers around the Chicagoland area.
