Teen's Death Sparks Effort to Save Lives

Mom starts Teen Heart Foundation after losing her daughter to sudden cardiac arrest in 2008.

Just a few days before entering her senior year of high school, 17-year-old Jenny Snyder collapsed on a soccer field in Glenview. Ambulances rushed the apparently healthy Glenbrook North student to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with sudden cardiac arrest and died a few hours later. In contrast to a heart attack, which is typically caused by a blocked artery, cardiac arrest happens when the heart’s electrical system malfunctions and can occur without warning in apparently healthy young people like Jenny. A vivacious teenager with dark brown hair and a wide smile, Jenny loved going to Chippewa Ranch Camp in Wisconsin every summer. She dreamed of attending the University of Connecticut and liked swimming, running, windsurfing and …

Sam Samorian: Synonymous With Success

This week's Patch Portrait series also features Wilmette's piano man and Morton Grove's Lady Violet.

This week's Patch Portrait series also features Wilmette's piano man and Morton Grove's Lady Violet. The words humble, influential and successful do not even begin to describe former Glenbrook North football, wrestling and baseball coach Harold "Sam Samorian." A Rockford native, Samorian graduated from Rockford East High School before attending Drake and Illinois State University. After time spent in the Army, Samorian earned his degree from ISU in 1955 and began his teaching career in central Illinois before moving to Northbrook in 1958. Samorian's first year as head football coach came in 1964, and ten years later, he led the Spartans to their first-ever Class 5A State Championship, upsetting heavily favored East St. Louis, 19-13, in …
