Only Deerfield High School's Jack Kasbeer continues on into Saturday's matches.
The Deerfield High School's boys tennis team ended the day Friday in fifth place, with all but one of their players having finished their tournament play at the State Tennis Tournament at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. They trail Hindsdale, Lake Forest, Stevenson and New Trier. Jack Kasbeer is the only Warrior to advance into Saturday's play. He lost his fourth round match, then won his sixth and seventh round consolation matches. Toby Ma lost his fourth round match, won his sixth round consolation match, then lost the 7th round consolation match. Glenbrook South, New Trier, Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame, Niles North and Loyola athletes will join Wildkits at State Meet.
Taking home the team trophy for the sixth straight year, the Evanston High School boys track team won the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie sending five individuals and three relay teams to the State Meet May 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston The Wildkits compiled 85 points. Glenbrook South took home second place with 72 followed by Prospect in third with 70 and New Trier fourth with 58. Niles West accumulated 47 for fifth with Deerfield sixth, Main South seventh, Niles North eighth, Highland Park ninth place, Notre Dame of Niles tenth, Maine West 11th , Loyola Academy 12th, Maine East 13th\, Glenbrook North 14th and Von Steuben 15th. Deerfield High School gymnast Christine Stitcher is heading to the state finals. Stitcher qualified at Thursday's section meet to advance on the vault and bars, as well as in the all-around competition, according to Warriors Coach Carol Myers. This is her third trip to the state finals. "Christine struggled in the first half of the meet, falling off the beam and some minor mishaps on floor, but really came through on vault and bars," Myers said. Myers pointed out some other notable performances. "Leslie Ross hit her season high of 8.225 on bars," Myers said. Camp will intensify next week when Deerfield’s football team puts on its pads.
They have not been wearing pads and most of the time their helmets are off, but members of the Deerfield High School football team are spending part of each day getting ready to defend their Central Suburban League North Division Title this summer. The Warriors are engaged in their annual summer camp at Adams Field most mornings and the occasional seven on seven scrimmage—that is when they wear helmets—with other teams. Defending Central Suburban League North Division champs begin fall campaign August 24 against Zion-Benton.
Deerfield High School’s football team will open its season against Zion-Benton of the North Suburban Conference at 7:30 p.m. August 24 in Zion, according to schedules announced Thursday by the Illinois High School Association. After a second non conference contest August 31 against St. Viator, the Warriors have a pair of Central Suburban League crossover games before beginning defense of their Central Suburban League North Division title Sept. 21 against Glenbrook North. After dropping its first three games in 2011, Deerfield went on a six game winning streak to win the league title with an undefeated conference record and earn a post season berth. Lessons in high school and college helped shape philosophy for new Warrior basketball coach.
A lesson in humility as a freshman at Trinity International University in Bannockburn was a major force in the professional development of Dan McKendrick, Deerfield High School’s new varsity boys’ basketball coach. A star at Willowbrook High School, McKendrick, 31, did not know what to expect when he stepped into the world of college basketball at Trinity. What he learned was how to be an integral member of a group. A laser like focus on championship tennis was the key ingredient for Jason Brown as the Deerfield High School senior breezed to the state title Saturday with a pair of straight set victories in Arlington Heights. Though the scores indicate Brown had an easy time winning the title match and the semifinal contest 90 minutes before, he increased his concentration at critical points throughout the day to puncture his opponents’ confidence. Deerfield finishes fifth in team standings with all points coming from Jason Brown and Toby Ma.
Update (5 p.m., Saturday) Jason Brown breezed to the Illinois state tennis championship today with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Julian Childers of Marion Catholic in the title match helping Deerfield High School finish fifth in the team standings. Before Brown could play for the crown, he had to win his semifinal match earlier today, 6-1, 6-4, over Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central. Brown displayed intense focus throughout both matches. In five games that reached deuce he won the next two points each time to win each game at critical stages of each contest. “He has an unbelievable ability to focus,” Assistant Coach Ryan Johnstone said.
