Warrior duo each win first three matches to advance to round of 16.
Deerfield High School tennis standouts Jason Brown and Toby Ma won their three opening round matches in the State Tournament Thursday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. The top seeded Brown, who placed third last year, stopped Matt Bisbee of Chicago Marist, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round before breezing past Nate Campanile of Grayslake North, 6-0, 6-2. Top qualifiers to compete at State Finals this weekend
Even small seeds can grow into a surprisingly strong crop. That is what the Deerfield High School boys’ track team will be looking for Friday and Saturday at the Illinois High School Association’s State Finals at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The IHSA seeding formula, which is based on how the Warriors placed at the Sectionals May 17, forecasts the Warriors to come away with zero points. But Coach Jeremy Kauffman and his team know that seeding is not what runs the races. “The state meet isn’t about seeds,” Kauffman said. “It is about who performs that weekend. May 22 Volleyball The Final Score: Deerfield defeated Highland Park, 25-19, 25-19. Warriors Star Performers: Scott Laner dished out 15 assists and had three digs while Adam Nadler and Andrew Hector spiked seven kills. Hector added a pair of blocks and three digs while Nadler blocked two shots and dug two more balls out. Ross Lehrman had 10 digs. Other Notable Warrior Performances: Jerome Fine chipped in with nine assists, an ace and three digs as John Harlan had six kills and three blocks. Friends since fourth grade, trio lead Warriors
The three amigos will soon be making their final ride soon for Deerfield High School. Megan Buranosky, Emily Shanker and Nicki Chamberlain-Simon have been stalwarts on the Deerfield softball team for the past two seasons. But the trio, who are also tri-captains, have been friends since fourth grade. They will lead the Warriors into the New Trier Regional at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against Glenbrook South. “We met playing travel softball,” said Shanker, who plays third base for the Warriors. “And we became good friends since. Katy McIntyre, Devon Gold and Christine Stitcher give solid performances at State Finals.
Katy McIntyre, Christine Stitcher and Devon Gold gave solid performances for the Deerfield High School girls’ track team at the State Track Meet Friday at Eastern Illinois University. Though none made Saturday’s finals, all three did “very well for themselves,” according to Coach Jeff Beaumont. McIntyre participated in both the discus and shot put while Gold competed in the triple jump and Stitcher set a personal best in the pole vault. McIntyre earned the right to say she is among the 25 best in Illinois in both events, according to Beaumont. She also kept very busy Friday. After throwing the shot 37-1, McIntyre had little time to rest before the discus. “She had to rush right over to the disc ring and jump right into that competition,” …

Jason Brown defeated Toby Ma for the Sectional tennis singles championship Saturday in what has become an intramural affair for the Deerfield High School tennis team. For the third year in a row the two Warriors met for the title after both had secured a return trip to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday in Arlington Heights. Brown, a senior, topped Ma, a junior, 6-2 in the first set when Ma defaulted after falling behind, 1-0, in the second. “I can’t beat him,” Ma said. “It’s impossible.” With the top four finishers in singles and doubles qualifying for the State Finals, the only suspense left when the semifinals began Saturday was individual accomplishments. Deerfield girls’ soccer team blanks Vernon Hills for title as Warriors go undefeated at home this year.
Deerfield High School’s girls’ soccer team completed an undefeated home season at Adams Field Friday night going unscored upon throughout its own Regional by defeating Vernon Hills, 2-0, for the title. The Warriors made it 8-0-5 for the year at home and 12-4-8 so far this year overall by taking the school’s first ever girls’ regional soccer crown. A 5-0 semifinal win Wednesday over Von Steuben left Deerfield unscored upon in league play. The team has yielded only six goals at home all year. The teams were scoreless for the first 32 minutes when one of the Cougars touched the ball with her hand near the goal.
