Update: Snow Forces Park District, Library To Alter Schedules

Park programs and library join schools in changing programs and hours because of the snow storm.

(Update at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday) The Patty Turner Center just closed for the day today and the Sachs Recereation Center will close at 6 p.m. because of the snow, according to Deerfiedl Park District Communications and Foundation Manager Darla Kuhs. At this time, the offices at Jewett Park Community Center plan to remain open for regitration until 5 p.m. (Update at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday) All programs at the Deerfield Park District are cancelled today because of the snow and the Deerfield Public Library will close at 1 p.m. The Park District has cancelled all activities, according to Communications and Foundation Manager Darla Kuhs. The Sachs Recreation Center remains open for now but Kuhs suggests people check by phone or online before going …

Obituary: Carole J. Keefer, Holy Cross Teacher

Keefer, 77, of Deerfield taught at Holy Cross School for 20 years. Visitation is Thursday and her funeral is Friday.

The following obituary is from Kelley Spalding Funeral Home.  Carole J. Keefer nee Lemm, 77, long-time resident of Deerfield, passed away January 1, 2013. Carole taught at Holy Cross School in Deerfield for 20 years. She was a very active volunteer at Holy Cross and St. Malachy’s School in Chicago. Local Schools Review Safety Procedures

District 109 and Deerfield High School communicate with families on the best way to help children in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown.

School officials in Deerfield wasted no time communicating with families about safety and students’ emotional well being over the weekend in the aftermath of the shootings Friday at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT. In Deerfield Public Schools District 109, Superintendent Renee Goier sent an email to all families Saturday letting them know the efforts of the District over the weekend to be ready to help children with emotional and other needs today. Ron, you missed my point about Scalia. He is a dyed in the wool constitutional originalist. Means HE doesn't feel that the Constitution is "living, breathing, document". Village Board Fights Disease, Drugs

Red Ribbon Day and World Polio Day proclaimed in Deerfield. Holy Cross School and Rotary lead efforts.

Proclaiming Red Ribbon Week to promote a drug free lifestyle and World Polio Day took center stage Monday at the regularly scheduled meeting of theDeerfield Village Board of Trustees. The week of Tuesday through Oct. 31 will be Red Ribbon Week in Deerfield promoting drug awareness with students at Holy Cross School leading the way. Students at Holy Cross will decorate the Village red Sunday and wear red shirts and socks to school with their uniforms. Holy Cross School Opens 75th Year Wednesday

Special activities planned to celebrate the anniversary.

Holy Cross School opens its 75th year Wednesday when it welcomes 221 students from preschool through eighth grade. The school has a special 75th anniversary logo designed by a group that includes a graduate of Holy Cross. There will be a number of events through the year to commemorate the institution’s heritage. One of the things will be trophy case featuring artifacts and other items depicting education in each decade of the school’s existence starting with the 1930’s, according to Principal Janice Di Vincenzo. “It will show education over the course of the years,” Di Vincenzo said. “The students will do the research and find the artifacts.” Another event will be an all service day Sept. 14 for the Feast of the Holy Cross where students …
