Jewel Repeals Mandatory Cart-to-Car Service

Patch readers had a lot to say last month when asked what they thought of a new store policy in which baggers were obliged to follow customers and their carts out to their vehicles whether they wanted help or not.

If you've avoided shopping at Jewel-Osco for fear of being awkwardly trailed to your car by an employee, you're not alone, but there is good news. The once mandatory policy created by Jewel's new owners, Cerberus Capital Management LP, has been repealed. A statement on the store's website says the cart-to-car service will still be offered to customers, but it will no longer be forced upon them. Parts of our customer service philosophy are things that every grocery store should do, like ensuring the stores are clean, the shelves are well stocked, and asking if you need help finding an item. Now, we’ve expanded our service to include taking your groceries out to your car. And, if you don’t want or need help, that’s fine too. Many customers …

No Means No: Is Jewel-Osco's Mandatory Cart-to-Car Service Too Much?

Whether you want them to or not, Jewel-Osco has implemented a new policy of following shoppers, and their carts, out to their vehicles. What do Patch readers think?

If you haven't shopped at your local Jewel-Osco grocery store in a while, be prepared for a new customer service initiative that you may, or may not, appreciate. It's called the "cart-to-car" service, according to couponsinthenews.com, and whether you want the help or not, your bagger is expected to follow you and your cart out to your vehicle. The service is mandatory, though Jewel-Osco denies it has anyting to do with keeping track of shopping carts, according to Coupons in the News. "We understand that this is a very different service and it might take our customers some time to understand that we want this to be the norm," said a Jewel customer service representative in the article. It was announced in January that Jewel-Osco stores …

Jewel’s Uncertainty Curbs Deerbrook Enthusiasm

Parent company of Chicagoland grocery chain is told to find a buyer.

Uncertainty surrounding the future of Jewel’s parent company, Supervalu, and the economy in general led the owners of Deerbrook Mall to regroup with plans to renovate the Deerfield shopping center. Gateway Fairview, the owners of the mall, had planned a major overhaul which involved moving Jewel into a new, modern store where Best Buy just closed. Other changes included relocating TJ Maxx to an outdoor location at the north end of the center. Earlier: Deerbrook Owners Pull Plug on Renovation Mall ownership had proposed a partnership with the Village enabling it to recoup a portion of its $26 million redevelopment expenses through property tax incentives and the Village Board of Trustees was working with Gateway Fairview to refine it. That …

Why not try it? The reduced costs of fuel and drivers for delivery probably makes drive thru a good business proposition for Peapod. Near the train station, and expy exits. Some people aren't home for the delivery, but can do drive thru. Can't hurt. As for Deerbrook....I hope they fire all the geniuses who have been working on this project and get some actual ideas on the table. Good luck to us!   more ›

Why is it not common policy for these stores to look at ID's when people purchase gift cards? It seems like as soon as a credit card is stolen this is immediately what the thieves go out and purchase. It's frustrating to continually hear about something like this that can be prevented so easily.   more ›

Intoxicated Customer Spits Racial Slur at Jewel Worker

Man has second encounter with police within 2 weeks that results in an arrest.

On Sept. 6, police pulled into Jewel's parking lot after they witnessed a man who appeared intoxicated yelling at another male outside the store, who later turned out to be the store manager. The employee told officers that Nicholas Thomas had been asked to leave the supermarket after personnel refused to sell him beer. The store manager said Thomas was extremely drunk and got upset about the incident and yelled, “Go back to f------ Mexico,” and then used a racial slur. The manager told officers that he could feel Thomas’s spit hitting his face while he yelled at him. Police arrested the 51-year-old man, who they say is known to sleep under the tollway, for disorderly conduct and criminal trespass to property. His court date is Oct. 27. …
