Changes Are A Coming in Deerfield

The District 109 Caucus quietly endorsed four candidates this past week, only one of which is a current Board of Education member.

There are a lot changes happening in Deerfield these days. Many of these changes are significant and most certainly will improve the lives of many throughout our community. First, there was the election of two Deerfield residents: Julie Morrison as Illinois State Senator and Brad Schneider as a United States Congressman. Then came the impressive "Middle School Model" format for our middle schools that will go into effect next fall. Morrison Seeks Her Successor

State Sen. Elect will resign as West Deerfield Township supervisor.

West Deerfield Township Supervisor and state Sen. Elect Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield) will leave her local post in the next two months to plunge into her new duties full time leaving an opening in the post she has held for nearly 16 years. Though a new supervisor will be elected April 2, the Township trustees will choose a successor to Morrison, most likely in December, to complete the balance of her term. That person can run for a full four-year term in April. Deerfield 2012 Election Night Results

Deerfield will be home to its Congressman and state senator. Check out our in-depth coverage of the results from the 10th Congressional District, the 29th State Senate and the Illinois 58th House Races.

No member of Congress has ever called Deerfield home. No state senator has hailed from Deerfield in more than 40 years.  By early January, the Village will be able to claim Rep. Elect Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) and state Sen. Elect Julie Morrison (D-Deerfield).  Victories by Schneider and Morrison were two of the significant outcomes from a night of election returns from the reelection of President Barack Obama to Congressional campaigns, Illinois General Assembly contests and county races.  Here are some of the highlights:  Schneider defeats Dold in a close race for Congress Brad Schneider ousted incumbent Robert Dold by only 2,434 votes to become the US Congressman from the 10th district. Morrison Defeats Friedman in Il 29th State Senate Race

Democrat Julie Morrison has won the race against Republican Arie Friedman with nearly 53 percent of the votes

Update: Deerfields Bakery Issues Recount in Obama-Romney Race

After accurately predicting 2004 and 2008 Presidential races, the cookie count is too close to call.

(Update at 6:40 p.m.) When Deerfields Bakery closed for the day at 5 p.m. today the number of cookies sold with the likenesses of President Barack Obama and Republican Challenger Mitt Romney was so close the Deerfield institution has issued a recount. “It was so close we’ve issued a recount,” Jacki Schmitt, one of the company’s owners, said. “You’ll have to check our website tomorrow.” One difference between the cookie election and the actual contest is voting more than once is allowed. “We encourage it,” Schmitt said. An opportune help wanted sign in front of the Cherry Pit Restaurant in Deerfield 23 years ago produced one of Deerfield’s leading entrepreneurs and civic backers. That is when Kevin Quigley, who was operating a business in Lake Forest and looking for some extra income, parked in front of the Cherry Pit, saw the sign, walked in, was hired as assistant manager and never left. State Senate Candidates Campaign in Deerfield

Deerfield was a hub of activity Wednesday for the two candidates who hope to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest). Both the Republican candidate, Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, and his Democratic opponent, West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, were in the Village. Earlier: Morrison, Friedman Intensify Attacks Morrison did herself some concrete good. She voted. When asked who she voted for, she answered with a smile. She does like the idea of early voting and hopes to see it expanded. “I’ll be very busy election day talking to voters so I decided to vote today,” Morrison said. “Early voting is a great idea. A combination of spending cuts and an increase/rejiggering of tax burdens is probably necessary. With the Nov. 6 general election nine days away and early voting into its second week, candidates for the United States Congress and the Illinois State Senate spent the weekend meeting voters and encouraging people to cast ballots.
