Breathe Deep North Shore and Illinois state chess champion Jonathan Kogan were recognized for their contributions to the community while Arbor, and Earth Day and National Public Safety Telecommunications Week were officially proclaimed in Deerfield at the start of Monday’s Board meeting. The LUNGevity Foundation will host the 'Breathe Deep Yogathon' at the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute in Highland Park on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The North Shore community is invited to attend the LUNGevity Foundation's "Breathe Deep Yogathon" at the Illinois Bone & Joint Institute in Highland Park from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23. The event will offer six classes, each featuring a different yoga style, taught by local well-known instructors. Massages, Reiki treatments, and refreshments will also be provided, and the day will end with an inspirational and healing gong bath. During current difficult times in the world, across the nation, and even close to home, the students of Deerfield High School (DHS) remind us of the kind and giving spirit of teenagers right here in our community. The recent efforts of DHS School Chest are a heartwarming example of what our kids, supported by their teachers and our community, are capable of. School Chest is a 3-week fundraising effort that was five months in the making. Led by DHS Student Council Juniors Samantha Gottstein and Graham Ambrose, School Chest 2012 co-chairs, the DHS student body chose LUNGevity Foundation as their beneficiary. These amazing kids took to heart the ties that LUNGevity has to Deerfield and understood that many people at DHS and in our community …

Deerfield High School students and community raise $135,393.17 for School Chest drive. Money will go to LUNGevity to fight lung cancer.
As soon as Deerfield High School School Chest chairs Graham Ambrose and Sam Gottstein announced the annual charity drive raised a record setting $135,393.17 for LUNGevity’s effort to fight lung cancer, the room erupted as though a championship was won. Students and community members were hugging and cheering the annual three-week effort of a 5K race, a dinner gala, talent competitions, a basketball tournament and more to raise money for the designated charity. Between the Toy and Food Drive, charity basketball at Deerfield High School and Christmas tree sales at the Optimist lot, Deerfield was all about giving Saturday.

Over 200 people gather for final Deerfield High School School Chest event. Fundraising continue through Thursday.
Deerfield High School School Chest activities continued as more than 200 people gathered to play Mah Jongg Tuesday in the cafeteria and raise money to fight lung cancer through LUNGevity. Following a 5K run Dec. 2, a gala evening dinner Dec. 3, Deerfield Idol Dec. 6, Mr. D.H.S. Monday, Mah Jongg night was the final community event, according to School Chest Co-Chair Sam Gottstein. Jordan Abosch wins latest fundraising event for Deerfield High School School Chest.
Jordan Abosch is a mere finalist no more. Abosch was one of four finalists in the Deerfield Idol competition Thursday as one of the many events this month to raise money for LUNGevity through the Deerfield High School School Chest drive. More than $10,000 raised from 5K run. Dinner termed big success. Next event is Thursday.
After an inspirational assembly Thursday, Deerfield High School students and the entire community got behind the School Chest drive raising money to benefit LUNGevity, an organization with Deerfield roots which fights lung cancer. Several hundred runners took part in a 5K race Saturday from Adam Field through the Prairie Wolf Slough and back netting more than $10,000, according to faculty sponsor Ryan Rockaitis. With a goal of raising more than of $100,000 to donate to LUNGevity, a charity with strong Deerfield ties, Deerfield High School opened its three-week School Chest drive Thursday with an assembly at the school. Deerfield High School students will raise fund for charity with deep community roots fighting lung cancer.
LUNGevity, a charity with deep Deerfield roots founded to battle lung cancer will be the beneficiary of the Deerfield High School School Chest fundraising efforts, according to a news release from the school. “We made community a central focus when evaluating charities for School Chest,” event co-chair Samantha Gottstein said. “LUNGevity surpassed our hopes of selecting a beneficiary that students, teachers, families and friends could feel connected to.” Her partner leading the event is Graham Ambrose.
