Heroin Defendant Considers Guilty Plea

All three accused of felony possession of heroin remain in Lake County Jail.

One of three defendants arrested Nov. 26 by Bannockburn Police for possession of heroin is considering a guilty plea, according to a statement made by his attorney Tuesday in Lake County Criminal Court in Waukegan. John Bergner, 54, of Northlake, who remains in Lake County Jail unable to post the $2,500 cash portion of a $25,000 bond, appeared before Judge Raymond Collins today for a hearing on the status of his bail conditions. Judge Allows Confession of Deerfield Murder Suspect

Jurors can view videotape of Deerfield’s Daniel Baker allegedly acting out murder of Marina Aksman of Vernon Hills.

A videotaped confession where Deerfield native Daniel Baker acts out the alleged murder of Vernon Hills woman Marina Aksman can be played to the jury during his trial, according to a report in the Lake County News Sun. Lake County Circuit Court Judge Fred Foreman denied a motion by Baker’s lawyers to keep the video out of court. The attorneys claimed Baker was “not of sound mind,” according to the article. “The court has no means of gauging these self-serving claims of his mental faculties,” Foreman said in his ruling as reported by the News Sun. Foreman has ruled Baker is fit to stand trial. Baker, who is accused of the April 1, 2010, bludgeoning of Aksman, remains in Lake County Jail awaiting trial. For more news and updates, "like" us …

Police Arrest Man for Forging Prescriptions

Libertyville man tries to obtain prescription drugs from Walgreens with forged prescription.

A Libertyville man was arrested May 29 on three felony counts of forgery for attempting to purchase 90 prescription Ritalin pills from the Walgreens store in downtown Deerfield, according to Deerfield Police reports. Harold Cline, 53, of Libertyville, was charged with three Class 3 felonies for forgery according to the report. The penalty for those offenses is one to three years in prison. Cline handed a prescription that appeared forged to a pharmacy technician on May 28, according to the report. The technician alerted police explaining to the officer how it was altered saying the doctor “doesn’t sign his name like that.” Police reviewed footage from Walgreens surveillance photos and returned to the store May 29. Osterman Suspect Pleads Guilty, Gets Probation

Hughes enters guilty plea to end case arising out of Jan. 2 explosion.

A Deerfield man arrested Jan. 26 for intent to manufacture a controlled substance pleaded guilty April 23 in Lake County Criminal Court in Waukegan and was sentenced to two years probation, according to a court spokesperson. Steven Hughes, 47, entered his guilty plea after a pretrial five days earlier where he and his lawyer negotiated with the Lake County State’s Attorney, according to the spokesperson. Though originally charged with Class 3 and Class 4 felonies carrying a potential 15-year prison sentence, according to Deerfield Police reports, he ultimately pleaded guilty to a Class 4 charge, according to the spokesperson.
