The Lake County Sheriff’s Office announced today it will conduct special patrols this Super Bowl weekend cracking down on drunk drivers and seat belt law violators. “We are reminding everyone that if you choose to drink and drive in Lake County this weekend, you will lose,” said Sheriff Mark Curran. “If you plan on drinking alcohol while cheering on your team, pass your keys to a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins. The Lake County Sheriff's Department will hold its next Citizen Police Academy course starting March 7. Interested residents are invited to apply to the program, which will provide a first-hand look at how the office of Sheriff Mark Curran maintains law and order for the residents of Lake County. The academy is a 10-week program with classes running approximately three hours each on Thursday evenings. The class begins at 6:30 p.m. each evening. Instruction is provided by sworn deputies and civilians in their field of expertise and is designed to provide a hands-on experience. The Lake County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Unit is a dedicated group of volunteers who assist the Sheriff’s Office sworn personnel on an emergency basis. Reserves may be called upon for a variety of reasons, including such things as directing traffic, searching for a missing person, or supplementing security for events such as the Lake County Fair. Reserves are uniformed civilians that are specially trained by the Sheriff’s Office to perform the duties required of them. A Reserve Deputy must have a flexible schedule and be able to respond immediately to a request for service. A prospective reserve deputy must meet the requirements listed below. Family members of murder victim Harry Dahms honor his memory and plead for any intormation from the public.
The children of Harry Dahms, the former Lake County Fair board member who was the victim of a homicide on June 1, issued a statement about their father whom they say had "a huge heart." The following statement was released June 3 on behalf of Dahms' son, Harry Jr. and his daughter, Robin: "Our dad was a hard-working, well-respected man who lived his life the way he wanted to. He wasn’t polished or refined but he had a huge heart and would go out of his way to help others. He loved his family and we love him and miss him terribly. Lake County lobbies successfully against Foreclosure Sale Bill.
Lake County leaders celebrated the defeat of HB1293, a bill that would have allowed for-profit foreclosure companies to conduct the foreclosure sale process, instead of the sheriff’s office. “Our courts and sheriff’s office have been providing counseling, information and compassion in this very emotional time for homeowners going through the foreclosure process,” said County Board Chairman David Stolman. The bill would have allowed banks to choose whether the county sheriff or a private firm handled the foreclosure process. The Lake County Sheriff's Office currently conducts the mortgage foreclosure sale process and provides information about the defendant's rights, as well as available social or legal services.
