Dream Comes True for Avenue Fashions Owner

After years in Chicago and Lincolnwood, Sandy Panuce opens her dream shop in Deerfield Square.

Sandy Panuce may be relatively new to the Deerfield merchant community, but the owner of Avenue Fashions has been in the apparel business all her life. It has been a family endeavor for over 60 years.  When she opened her Deerfield location on May 1, 2011, it was the culmination of what she hoped to achieve in the retail business. Recently, she took time to answer five questions for Patch.  What led you to open Avenue Fashions in Deerfield? I like the mall and Deerfield is in between Highland Park, Lake Forest, Northbrook, Riverwoods, Glenview and Glencoe.  Why is Deerfield a good community for the Avenue Fashions? Walgreens Stock Hits 4-Year High

Shares soar after new bargain struck with Express Scripts.

The stock of Deerfield based Walgreens, the nation’s largest drugstore chain, jumped to a four-year high today on the New York Stock Exchange after the company ended a dispute with Express Scripts, according to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle. Walgreens had an agreement with Express Scripts which ended Dec. 31. The new contract allowing Express Scripts customers to fill prescriptions at Walgreens will be effective Sept. 15, according to the Chronicle. The loss of business as a result of the deal’s expiration contributed to an 11 percent decline in company profits. The new deal ends a battle centered on reimbursement rates. As Walgreens stock soared to a four-year high, the price of shares in two of its competitors, CVS and Rite Aid…

Former McDonald’s Head to Lead Walgreens Board

James Skinner assumes duties as non-executive Walgreens Chairman of the Board.

James A. Skinner became the non-executive chairman of Deerfield based Walgreens today, according to a news release from the company. A member of Walgreens board of directors since 2005, Skinner retired recently as the chief executive officer of McDonalds. He replaces Al McNally who was the chairman since 2009 and a board member since 1999.  According to the release, this is consistent with Walgreens “succession and rotational planning process.” McNally remains on the board. While at McDonalds’s, Skinner oversaw the company’s expansion into Europe. Walgreens recently acquired a 45 percent stake in Great Britain’s largest pharmacy chain, Alliance Boots. “Jim Skinner’s long experience on the Walgreens board and decades of global success with …

Swanson Blossom Shop Speaks to Generations

Family business is in its second generation and so are the customers.

Swansons Blossom Shop owners Abe and Helen Schneider expected a nice retirement in 1983 when they sold Swanson the Florist on Western Avenue in Chicago after operating the then 87-year old North Side institution for 25 years. After five years, Abe Schneider, then 68, heard Deerfield’s long time Blossom Shop was for sale. Retirement was over. Earlier: Best Florist Award Goes to Swanson’s “He said ‘don’t worry, it’s a small little shop, no weddings, no nights, no Sundays,’” Helen Schneider said describing how her husband broke the news to her that their retirement was over. What the Schneiders expected to become a pastime turned into anything but as their customers from the city discovered they were back in business. “At least once a week …

Cilento Photography will arrive in Deerfield Square in autumn.

Deerfield’s newest business, Cilento Photography, found a home in the Village more than two years ahead of its scheduled opening in Deerfield Square this autumn. The company, currently operating as Flash Digital Photography in Northbrook, came upon Deerfield’s Historic Village two years ago in its constant search for the right settings for its portrait photography of families and individuals. “It’s a great place for kids,” Cilento Photography Assistant Manager Samantha Wade said. “We can use the old buildings as backdrops. They’re so well maintained. I love the way children react to them.” The company has been taking photographs of families and individuals in the Historic Village ever since. Now it will be making its local home in …

Shoppers Will Help Finance Deerbrook

Developers’ plan calls for a special sales tax district to ultimately pay for nearly two-thirds of $26-million redevelopment of 40-year-old shopping center.

Nearly two-thirds of a $26 million proposal to renovate the Deerbrook Mall will ultimately be financed by customers of the shopping center if developer Gateway Fairview can convince the Village Board of Trustees to go along with its ideas. When some of the Trustees balked at certain points in the proposal, Mayor Harriet Rosenthal had the Board take a step back. Rather than approve a letter of intent at Monday’s meeting, the mall owners will return with a more detailed explanation July 2. Earlier: Deerbrook Project Hits Snag “Before we go forward I wanted more information,” Rosenthal said. “That’s why we sent them back to the drawing board so we can get more answers. When you have a project this big you want consensus.” Unanimity among the …
