Good weather, contested races not enough to stir interest.
Voter turnout in Tuesday’s primary in Lake County echoed the low turnout throughout Illinois, even on a day when temperatures soared into the 80s. Just 23.46 percent of registered voters exercised their right to vote. Lake County Clerk Willard Helander said voter turnout for primaries is historically lighter than the general election. However, Helander said she was surprised that voters did not turnout for the 10th Congressional district race. The 10th district runs through most of Lake County. “That was surprising. It was a four-way race and well financed. I expected far more people to be out and interested,” she said. Helander was surprised that more people pulled a Republican ballot than Democrat. “My personal opinion is that people …

Bob Bednar ran on the platform of eliminating the office he is running for in Lake County. And apparently voters agree with him. The former Lake Bluff resident captured the Republican nomination in the Lake County Recorder of Deeds race over Highland Park's Marty Blumenthal in Tuesday night's primary. Bednar garnered 52 percent of the vote to nudge Blumenthal's 47 percent. He will face Democratic incumbent Mary Ellen Vanderventer in the November general election. Keith Brin emerged from an even closer race for Circuit Court Clerk Tuesday night over Gerald Dietz. Brin, a Highland Park resident, won by less than 3 percent with just over 51 percent of the vote while Dietz had better than 48 percent. Brin will face Democrat Cynthia Pruim …
Helton believes name recognition was the difference.
After being out of an elected office since 2009, former Lake Forest Mayor Mike Rummel is back as the Republican nominee in the Lake County District 12 race, defeating fellow Lake Forest resident Scott Helton Tuesday night. District 12 represents Lake Forest. Knollwood and parts of Highland Park and Deerfield. Rummel earned 60 percent of the vote compared to Helton's 39 percent. The two candidates stuck to issues in debates and often agreed on several, including the future of Route 53, Winchester House and the Fort Sheridan Golf Course. "Scott and I ran a really good race," Rummel said. "This race was about issues and how we were going to get to the end." Helton believes the difference was Rummel's elected past. "Name recognition was the …

I am bothered by Louise Hayes' flyer for her State's Attorney campaign in which she derides another candidate, Mike Nerheim, for defending “criminals,” as she puts it. I am appalled that she would go to the length of publicly mentioning pending cases, which could sway public perception and influence a jury's verdict - a clear violation of the code of conduct she should be holding herself up to. I also resent her use of the word "criminal" when the accused has not yet been convicted. We might as well go back to lynching people because we don’t like the color of their skin or their creed. But, then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if the State’s Attorney’s Office hasn’t already deteriorated to that level after hearing about the Juan Rivera …

Rick Santorum spoke at Hersey High School on Friday while campaigning to win the Republican presidential primary in Illinois Tuesday.
Former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum spoke to a packed theater of students and faculty at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights on Friday, ahead of Illinois’ primary on Tuesday. Santorum criticized President Barack Obama for dividing the country and said this was, perhaps, the most important election since 1860. He said America was great, not as the president suggested because of its commitment to entitlement programs, but because of its founding principles. “Without exception, we are the greatest country in the world,” Santorum said. Earlier: Gingrich says package tracking could be used to locate illegal immigrants. After completing about a 20-minute stump speech, Santorum answered three …

The Illinois Republican primary should have a been a triumphant homecoming of sorts for the Santorum for President campaign. After all, the former Pennsylvania Senator briefly attended and graduated from Mundelein’s Carmel Catholic High School in north suburban Lake County. His chief Illinois backer is Al Salvi, a former state representative and failed U.S. Senate candidate who is not only a fellow Carmel graduate, but whose family’s wealthy trial lawyer fortune paid for the Carmel gymnasium that bears the Salvi name. Santorum “supporters” created a “Carmel High School for Santorum” Facebook page, (apparently moderated by Salvi family members) that touts Santorum as model Carmel graduate who “embodies everything that true practicing …
