Campaign claims an "impressive victory."
Though the race isn't officially over, it looks like Lauren Turelli will probably win the Republican primary for 58th District State Representative. With all of the precincts in Lake and Cook counties reporting, Turelli leads Dr. Mark Neerhof by 558 votes out of 8,954. She leads Neerhof in both counties, with 238 votes to his 222 in Cook County and 4,518 to his 3,976 in Lake. The winner will face Democrat Scott Drury in the general election. Drury was endorsed by State Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park), who announced she wouldn't seek reelection to the post last year. "We're not out of it," Neerhof's campaign manager Mick Paskiewicz told Patch Tuesday night. He said the campaign would wait for early and absentee votes to be counted before…
The primaries may be over, but that just means the general election is about to start.
It's time for a reprieve from robocalls. The 2012 primary election season is over and the results are in. The primary races had some flair and drama, all to set up the big contests in November. Consciously, I chose not to write about the primary contests. I felt, probably like most voters, that it would take a lot of work to really understand the differences in the candidates enough to publicly voice opinions of them. Candidly, I also was turned off at the aggressive tactics in some of the races, in a way that lead me to choose silence over saying anything negative. In the 10th District Congressional race, the four-way contest between Brad Schneider, Ilya Sheyman, Vivek Bavda and John Tree ended up pretty much as I would have predicted. …

Turelli leads by 548 votes, with one precinct yet to report in Cook County.
Update 9:35 p.m.: All seven of Cook County's precincts are reporting, putting Turelli's lead over Neerhof at 558 votes out of 8,954. Neerhof's campaign manager Mick Paskiewicz told Patch he was looking into how many early and absentee votes had been cast that have not yet been counted. When asked if they were still in the race, Paskiewicz replied "We're not out of it." Update 9:15 p.m.: Mark Neerhof is speaking to a gathering of supporters at his election night event in Lake Forest. He's not conceding, but he is calling a win "unlikely." The Lake Forest doctor currently trails Lauren Turelli by 548 votes. "These results are not what we hoped," Neerhof said. Update 9:10 p.m.: Neerhof is now losing to Turelli in both Lake and Cook Counties …

State representative candidate under fire for citing a degree from Cambridge she never received.
A Republican candidate for the seat now held by retiring state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park) is catching flak for claiming a degree in her academic background she never received. Lauren Turelli, who is running against Dr. Mark Neerhof in the March 20 Republican primary to represent the 58th District, has listed in campaign materials, on Facebook and LinkedIn that she received an advanced degree in International Relations from England's University of Cambridge in 1994. According to a letter from Cambridge's records department obtained by Patch, Turelli (then unmarried and with the last name Grabowski) "was unsuccessful in her studies and withdrew in February 1995 without gaining any qualification from this institution." Turelli, a Lake…

58th District Representative candidates answer questions at forum.
Mark Neerhof and Lauren Turelli may be both Republicans running for the 58th District seat, but they split when it comes to the issue of Medicaid. Neerhof, a doctor who practices at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, is running in his first election. He has lived in Lake County for 21 years, including 15 in Deerfield and the last six in Lake Forest. Turelli has lived in Lake Forest all of her life. She currently serves on the Lake Forest Parks and Recreation Board and as an elected Republican township precinct committeeman. The two candidates answered questions in Sunday's candidate forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters-Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Area (LWV) and Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Patch at Lake Bluff Elementary School. The …

Candidates for 9th and 10th Districts must wait until Dec. 23 to file petitions. All other Illinois office seekers begin today and must finish by Dec. 5.
Candidates for Illinois’s 18 seats in the United States House of Representatives can do nothing but continue to gather signatures on their petitions today as all other office seekers in the state are ready to file their petitions to get on the March 20 primary ballot. After Gov. Patrick Quinn signed legislation enacting the new Congressional map last summer Republican members of Congress including Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) of the 10th Congressional District challenged the new boundaries in federal court. As it considers the case, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois postponed the filing period for people running for Congress Wednesday. Rather than file petitions today, the Court ordered a delay …

Lake Forest's Turelli surprised by former prosecutor’s move.
Scott Drury’s entry into the race to replace retiring state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park) came with the endorsement of the incumbent Tuesday shortly after the candidate said he would seek the seat. Drury was in a three-way race for the Democratic nomination for Lake County State’s Attorney since August before he decided to run for a seat in the Illinois General Assembly Tuesday. May, who has served a district consisting primarily of Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Highland Park, Deerfield, Glencoe and Northbrook since 2001, likes the independence Drury has shown in his eight years as an assistant U.S attorney. “He has a good background in the U.S. Attorney’s office,” May said. “He will be an independent voice who is concerned with good …

Neerhof and Turelli to vie for Republican nod. Two Democrats consider seeking nomination.
One new Republican has joined the campaign to claim the Illinois General Assembly seat state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park) said she would vacate less than two weeks ago. Lake Forest business owner Lauren Turelli declared her candidacy Monday to enter the March 20 Republican primary against Lake Forest physician Mark Neerhof. Neerhof announced he would run August 29. Two Democrats, New Trier Democratic Organization President Priscilla Sperling and Highland Park City Councilman Paul Frank are giving serious consideration to entering the race. Two declared Republican candidates Turelli, who lost to May in 2010 with 43 percent of the vote, previously said she would seek the Republican nomination for the District 13 Lake County Board seat in…

Mark Neerhof tells group he will oppose Karen May.
With a call to repeal the Illinois income tax increase passed in January, Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman officially declared his candidacy for the Republican nomination to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) Monday night. Earlier: Garrett will not seek reelection “We have to create a business friendly environment, repeal the tax increase hand in hand with cutting spending,” Friedman told a crowd of more than 60 people at a restaurant in Highland Park’s Ravinia neighborhood. Friedman, 45, is the only announced Republican candidate. He's a Highland Park native who served as a helicopter pilot in the United States Navy before becoming a pediatrician. He is married with five children. He ran for the Republican…

You've written two dozen responses here but I still don't see what the other side of the story actually is. You wrote that she studied and was given a "trust me" verbal direction from the University that she had completed the studies and earned the degree. The University themselves did not confirm this when contacted by Patch, apparently. The credential used to appear on Turelli's list of …   more ›
