The College of Lake County is hoping to enlist upwards of 250 area residents to volunteer in partnership with the United Way of Lake County for the Martin Luther King Day of Service on Saturday, Feb. 2. Are you in?
To celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the College of Lake County, in partnership with United Way of Lake County, is seeking up to 250 volunteers to work on several service projects on Saturday, Feb. 2 that help increase educational opportunities in local communities. Volunteers age 10 and above are invited to volunteer as are family groups, church and youth groups, scout groups and CLC staff and students. Registration is from 7:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. in room C005 (C Wing Auditorium) on the CLC Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St., in Grayslake. Local members of Congress spread out through Washington Saturday taking books to a children’s hospital and sprucing up a children’s shelter as part of the National Day of Service honoring the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King. Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Deerfield) took books to the National Children’s Medical Center while Rep. Deerfield Park District will have events for children out of school for the Martin Luther King holiday Monday.
While Deerfield has no official events planned Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day, the Deerfield Park District has a “Kids Day Off” program for the Villages youth from kindergarten through eighth grade. “We schedule these for all school holidays, even in service days,” Park District Communications and Foundation Manager Darla Kuhs said. Congregation Solel will dedicate a plaque commemorating the civil right's leaders visit in 1966.
The excitement was palpable as the crowd awaited Martin Luther King, Jr., in the packed sanctuary of Congregation Solel. On that day in June, 1966, the civil rights leader was late—and as the diverse crowd waited for him, the tension mounted. “There was this great sense of anticipation and excitement,” recalled Congregation Solel past president Gail Goldstein, who was a young mother living in Highland Park at the time. While the crowd waited, a youth choir from the First Baptist Church of North Chicago and a folk singer performed, and then local dignitaries made brief speeches.
