Deerfield’s Public Library opens its temporary doors Monday for the coming year while its main facility at 920 Waukegan Road undergoes an extensive $12 million renovation and 10,000 sq. ft. expansion made possible by voters who passed a referendum in November, 2010. The current 33,000 square foot facility built in 1971 is showing its age both in its confining structure and in accommodating new technology. Funds will help make the building more accessible.
The Deerfield Public Library has been awarded a $125,000 construction grant to help make the building more handicapped accessible. The funds will support the library's upcoming improvement project. It is maximum amount awarded under the Live and Learn Construction Grant provided by the Illinois Secretary of State's Office, according to a news release. The funds will allow for fully handicapped accessible restrooms on all floors as well as fully compliant stairways and public fire safety routes, according to the release. After approving a $12-million renovation project for the Deerfield Public Library in 2010, voters may know within a few weeks the location of its interim home. During its regular meeting Feb. 1, the library board is hoping to make a final decision between two spaces in Deerfield, according to Executive Director Mary Pergander. Its my understanding that the design already included those items, but because of the way things work, since the facility was not yet built, they could, and did, seek state funding to cover this part of the work. None the less, the rest of your conclusions are accurate.   more ›
