District 109 Removes French From 6th Grade Curriculum

Incoming sixth graders will learn Spanish rather than choose between the two languages.

Spanish will be the only foreign language offered to incoming sixth graders at Caruso and Shepard Middle Schools in next year, according to a report from Superintendent Renee Goier at Monday’s Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education meeting. In the past, students have had the choice of taking French or Spanish in middle school. After teachers and staff met with the Deerfield High School language department, they decided to offer only Spanish for the coming term and take that time to study the impact of the change. I'll say this now to all new board members, and I have said it before: The incoming board MUST be willing to re evaluate every desision made by this out going superintendent and board made this year and in particular these last 3 months.... those involving personnel hirings and appointments as well as expenditures. They must have the courage to nullify or reverse those desicions and selections …   more ›

New 109 Superintendent Keeps Eyes on Future

Michael Lubelfeld tells Patch his ideas on education as he prepares to become District 109’s new superintendent July 1.

An education preparing Deerfield’s children to be productive members of a work force requiring tasks not yet envisioned let alone taught is the mission Michael Lubelfeld has given himself as the incoming superintendent of Deerfield Public Schools District 109. An eight-year Deerfield resident while he worked as a superintendent in Norridge and an administrator in other suburbs including Highland Park, Lubelfeld is no stranger to the community or the expectations it has for its youth. Earlier: Deerfield Resident, 109 Parent To Head District “We have to prepare our children for their future, not our past, at all levels of the (educational) spectrum,” Lubelfeld told Patch Tuesday. He is referring to all students from the smartest to those in …

I am excited to see Mr. Lubelfeld add the A to STEM, thereby including "the arts". Involvement in the arts, like involvement in athletics, teaches skills not always available in the classroom, and helps our students be more well rounded, disciplined and helps build social and leadership skills. Excited to see the new era start in District 109!   more ›

Ronnie - now I am going to prove you wrong....there IS wide-scale support for air conditioning our schools. Just because you do not agree with it, does not mean others feel the same. IF you REALLY attended school board meetings, you would KNOW the support this has. I have children in district 109 and not one student, parent, teacher, aide, etc has said "wow this is a stupid, wasteful idea". You …   more ›

It's nice to have a Deerfield Tax Payer spending our money and his money. Perhaps we'll see more responsibility. Two school districts and the Park District are our largest taxing bodies. Someday having one school district for a Village our size and just containing Deerfield Schools will save money and make the transition from middle school to high school smoother.   more ›
