Two babies were born shortly after midnight, one in Highland Park and one in Evanston.
Naija Niyogi was the first baby born at an area hospital on New Year’s Day. She arrived Jan. 1, 2013 at 12:39 a.m. Naija was born to Shiladitya Niyogi and Aindrila Gupta of Highland Park at NorthShore University HealthSystem Highland Park Hospital. The baby girl is 6-pounds, 5-ounces and 19.5 inches. This is the couple’s first child. About two minutes later, Samson Chambers was born to Chicago residents Donald and Sheryl Chambers at NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston at 12:41 a.m. The boy came in at 8-pounds, 3-ounces and 20-inches. “I wanted [Samson] to be born on Christmas day and my husband wanted him to be born on New Year’s Day,” Sheryl Chambers said. “My husband got his wish.” This is the fifth child for the Chambers …

If you’re feeling good enough to get out on New Year’s Day, several stores and restaurants will be open to welcome you. However, others will be hibernating until the second day of 2013. Some restaurants will run their regular hours, while others will have modified hours for New Years Day. Here is a sampling of spots you can and cannot visit.
