This pooch really knows how to fetch!
Meet Max A. Pooch, the "recycled" Labrador retriever who loves to help his owner Keith Sanderson recycle. Max even has his own Facebook page and website with tips on protecting the environment. Max, of Deerfield, was originally adopted about seven years ago from Orphans of the Storm, an animal shelter in Riverwoods. Tired of the basic game of fetch, Sanderson determined that Max was smart and energetic enough to learn some a valuable new trick—recycling. Soon, Max was fetching items like plastic water bottles and aluminum cans on their daily walks, reported Patch in 2011. Orphans of the Storm Sets Up Shop at Northbrook Court.
When looking for a Valentine’s gift, why not give one that will love you back? That is what Riverwoods based Orphans of the Storm is making possible at Northbrook from noon to 7 p.m. through Feb. 18 at Northbrook Court. Volunteers from the organization are staffing an adoption center and gift wrapping facility on the lower level of the mall. If that does not work, the Riverwoods shelter, with more than 500 dogs and cats, is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Anyone looking for a different caroling experience can sing along with the animals Thursday through Sunday through Dec. 23 at Orphans of the Storm in Riverwoods. Both professional and amateur musicians will lead the effort at 5 p.m. each Thursday through Saturday. On Sundays, the music can be heard from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m., according to a news release from the organization. Get local news in a daily email from Patch. It's like getting a free newspaper. Orphans of the Storm dogs (and a few kittens) were part of the Glenview Street Sale on June 30. This annual event always draws large crowds, even when it’s 90 degrees and sunny. That meant lots of exposure for the pooches and the shelter as a whole. There were four dogs and four kittens who were working the crowd on Saturday, and they are all eager to find their new home. The first dog I saw when I arrived at the shelter’s booth was Balto, an 8-year-old Shepherd mix. This big boy is so laidback and gentle. Balto was the lucky dog who got to spend most of his time in the kiddie pool that was set up to keep them cool – and he would sometimes cool off the people petting him by getting up and shaking all the water off his fur! This week's Patch Portrait series also features a Skokie shortstop pursuing his big league dreams. By now you may have heard of Max and his unique trick. After rescuing the Labrador from Riverwood’s animal shelter Orphans of the Storm, Max’s owner Keith Sanderson decided to teach his pup more than the normal game of fetch. Every morning the duo hit Deerfield’s streets looking for trash to pick up. Max spots things like bottles and cans, retrieves them and brings them to Sanderson to be recycled. Riverwoods facility beats odds and has adoption success compared to others.
“Hi sweetie,” Rochelle Bishop whispered to a dog at Orphans of the Storm while enthusiastically petting its nose through a cage. The Zion resident said she traveled 40 minutes to the animal shelter in Riverwoods after she was tipped off about its great selection. “I think it’s better to give a dog a home than go buy a puppy from a pet store,” Bishop said about her desire to select a furry friend from a facility like Orphans. “It’s too many dogs that need homes.” Bishop is exactly the kind of person animal adoption centers are looking for. Adoptions and donations drop as economy forces owners to give up their pets.
Heartland Animal Shelter in Northbrook is looking for a home for Sparky, who was rescued from a shelter that euthanizes animals. He was sent there by his owner who lost her home and had no funds to board him. A Refuge for Saving the Wildlife, also in Northbrook, has been looking for a new home for Eddie the Cockatoo for a year and a half. The bird was given up by his owner whose business was crashing. At the Community Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) in Evanston, an older dog was handed over by a woman who had lost her home and was moving in with friends. The dog didn’t live long afterward. “She just died of a broken heart,” said volunteer Erin Marcus. “Those are bad days when we take in animals like that.” The details are always different, but…
