Deerfield gets no sales tax revenue for this at all. Why promote a business that provides nothing for your community but increased costs to you. The perceived savings are not real, you will just pay in other ways like in your real estate taxes. At least Jewel contributes to help the Village and community.   more ›

Metra Stations Get 'Virtual Grocery Stores'

Peapod has set up 'virtual store aisles' at the train station, so commuters can shop for food and have it delivered to home or office. Chicago specialties like Big Bowl, Wildfire, are included.

If you're waiting for a train at the Metra station, you'll now be able to shop for groceries—including some Chicago specialty foods—at the same time.  Peapod, a grocery delivery service with headquarters in Skokie and a huge warehouse in Lake Zurich, has set up "virtual shopping aisles" at 17 stations in the Chicago area. Commuters can check out the Peapod display on signs at the stations, download a Peapod app on their smartphones, then scan the groceries they want for delivery to their homes or offices.  The products aren't just cereal and milk, either. "We're trying to showcase local products," said Elana Margolis, Peapod's director of public relations, explaining the store will carry Chicago specialties from Big Bowl, Wildfire, Eli's …

Deerfield Gives Green Light to Peapod

Online company will upgrade former Amcore Bank at 677 Lake Cook Road and support the village’s “engine turn-off” policy, but operations won’t generate sales tax for Deerfield.

At the board of trustees meeting Tuesday, Peapod officially got the go-ahead to open a grocery pick-up and drive-thru in the former Amcore Bank building at 677 Lake Cook Rd near Home Depot. A first consideration of Peapod’s request for a zoning text amendment and special use request occurred Aug. 20.  The village approved both requests, but asked for a follow-up response to three areas of concern before the final stamp of approval. Those included an explanation as to why the village would not generate sales tax from items picked up at the future Deerfield location, and questions on whether Peapod was willing to make aesthetic improvements to the building and support the “engine turn-off” policy. Bruce Chanen, attorney for Peapod, said the …

I agree, they have interpreted the law and Deerfield has not. Deerfield should fight for the sales tax. As I said, Deerfield has a sales tax deal with Walgreens. Deerfield gets sales tax based upon the corporate location being in Deerfield. Deerfield rebates a portion back to Walgreens. A win win. I'm guessing Lake Zurich may have a similar deal with Pea Pod, or perhaps Skokie if that's where …   more ›

Deerbrook Owners Pull Plug on Renovation

Mayor announces development at Monday’s Village Board meeting. Peapod proposes drive-up facility and police chief comments on arrest of Deerfield teens in Highland Park Burglary.

Economic uncertainty was one of the reasons Deerbrook owner Gateway Fairview told the Deerfield Village Board of Trustees it would not continue its current redevelopment project of the shopping center. Mayor Harriet Rosenthal made the announcement just before the public comment section of Monday’s meeting of the Village Board of Trustees. Earlier: Deerbrook Project Hits Snag “(Gateway Fairview) has advised the Village they are withdrawing their request for public redevelopment assistance and not pursuing their proposed project at this time,” Rosenthal said. “The overall challenges presented by the economy caused them to reassess their strategy for Deerbrook.” Among other things, the shopping center owners are concerned with the financial …

Would you mind elaborating on exactly what you mean by 'poor police performance'? [You got robbed or something?] Understand, such an obtuse reference usually needs to be qualified in a public discussion forum, since generally the details are not completely know to all. Truth be told though, it seems like your are making some sort of overarching statement like- Deerbook mall (ghetto)--> Deerfield …   more ›
