Village Trustees may decide Monday to abate property tax levy by more than 10 percent.
A collaborative effort by the Deerfield Board of Trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting coupled with skillful pencil sharpening by Acting Finance Director Eric Burk could result in a reduction in exces of 10 percent of the Village’s portion of the property tax levy. Though the potential savings to Deerfield’s taxpayers will not be known until the Board acts at a scheduled public hearing on the levy at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Village Hall, Burk will suggest a reduction of $1,361,226 from the initial $10,140,832. An increase in the real estate tax levy assessed by the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education of potentially more than five percent was unanimously approved at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting. The hike means the owner of a home worth $475,000 last year which is now worth $451,250 this year could pay an additional $174 annually in property taxes based on information contained in a 39-page report made available to the public at the meeting. Use of reserves shaves off a portion of proposed tax hike for home owners.
Deerfield real estate owners will pay less property tax next year than originally planned though there will still be an increase of slightly less than $100 per year on a $500,000 house, according to Director of Finance Robert Fialkowski. After trustees received assurances from Fialkowski during Monday’s Village Board meeting that sufficient reserves exist to abate approximately $833,000 in taxes, the Board unanimously approved a $10,299,236 property tax levy for 2011 due next year.
