Board Honors Citizens, Welcomes New Member

Three Guys and a Truck makes last run in June.

Before discussing legislation for Deerfield, the Village Board of Trustees took time to honor longstanding citizen contributions and the achievement of youth during its May 6 meeting. After a 10-year run, Three Men and a Truck will make its last run from 1 to 3 p.m. June 2 at the West Deerfield Township office. Founders Carl Berg, Don Bruss and Paul Zavagno will no longer handle an event which has collected food for the West Deerfield Township Food Pantry. Relay For Life Heats Up This Week

Fundraiser set Monday; Paint the Town Purple slated Saturday.

The Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life is less than a month away and two events to raise money and create awareness will take place this week. The Relay is scheduled from 6 p.m. June 7 to 6 a.m. June 8 at the Deerfield High School’s Adams Field track. An all you can eat fundraiser will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Italian Kitchen with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Relay For Life. The event was organized by Michel and Angela Butera who are honoring his mother, Joan Butera, who died 10 years ago from cancer. “Our goal is to encourage community members to join forces and help celebrate more birthdays,” Angela Butera said. “We have all been touched by cancer in one form or another.” The other event is Paint the Town …

Relay For Life Plans Open House

Deerfield-Highland Park Relay for Life kicks off 2013 effort Wednesday.

An open house for the Deerfield Highland Park Relay For Life from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Trax Tavern and Grill in Deerfield will let the public know the plans for annual all night event, according to a release from the American Cancer Society. The annual event will take place from 6 p.m. June 7 through 6 a.m. June 8 at Deerfield High School’s Adams Field. The local planning committee has set a $100,000 fundraising goal. Community members can learn more about the American Cancer Society, survivor recognition, luminaria, advocacy and sponsorship during the open house as well as enjoy pizza and drinks courtesy of Trax, according to the release. Walgreens Puts Corporate Citizenship on Display

Toys for Tots is just one of many ways the Deerfield based company gets involved in local communities.

Walgreens corporate citizenship was on display Monday when employees at the company’s Deerfield corporate headquarters helped two United States Marines load a truck full of holiday gifts as part of the Toys for Tots program. The drive took place not only at the corporate headquarters but at Walgreens 8,000 stores throughout the country with the toys staying in the local communities throughout the nation. Help Plan Relay For Life Wednesday

Initial planning meeting for annual American Cancer Society event set at 6 p.m. at Village Hall.

Planning for the annual Deerfield-Highland Park Relay for Life begins with an initial planning meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Deerfield’s Village Hall. The event is a major activity of the American Cancer Society. Individuals are needed to help with logistics, entertainment, team recruitment, survivor and caregiver activities, securing community support, food and prizes. This year’s event is chaired by Assistant Deerfield Village Manager Jenny Maltas. Peers Honor Village Official for Charitable Efforts

Jenny Maltas receives second honor this year from professional association.

Jenny Maltas, the assistant to Deerfield Village Manager Kent Street, was once again honored by her peers when the Illinois City/County Management Association paid tribute to her community service efforts in June. A month ago she was given the association’s outstanding service award as one of the top municipal management officials in the state. Earlier: Relay for Life Opens Saturday This time Maltas’ nine-year effort as a fundraiser to fight cancer brought her recognition. Her Relay For Life team of family members, Courtney’s Crusaders, has raised over $120,000 in that time to fight the disease. Both the profession and fundraising are family efforts. Cancer Survivors Unify With Purpose

With stories as different as the 300 people present, Relay For Life celebrates success fighting the disease.

Cancer survivors, their families, their caretakers and people who want to fight the disease came together at the Deerfield High School track for the annual Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life Saturday with a purpose as unified as their stories were diverse. More than 300 people circled the track at some point during the 12-hour event which began Saturday night and ended Sunday morning. Some participants brought tents and sleeping bags to rest as different teammates took their turns walking around the quarter-mile oval. Relay For Life Spawns Hope

Hundreds circle Adams Field track Saturday to raise awareness of cancer and money to fight it.

Circling the Adams Field track with a message of hope, more than 300 people participated in the annual Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life Saturday at Deerfield High School. The event is a major fundraising and awareness event sponsored by the American Cancer Society. Donna Lee Caringella of Highland Park told the crowd at the opening ceremonies about her diagnosis just under two years ago and how she is now in remission. Deerfield’s Janet Goldberg talked to Patch about her 13-year battle with the disease. “When something stops working my doctor tells me about something new to try,” Goldberg said of her survival for seven years with Stage 4 Cancer. When the Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life circles the Adams Field Track at Deerfield High School from 6 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, not many people will know how Jenny Maltas was a force behind the scenes. Maltas, an assistant to Deerfield Village Manager Kent Street, has been part of the nationwide event since her mother was diagnosed with cancer 12 years ago. Her team, Courtney’s Crusaders, is one of the top ten fundraising groups in Illinois within the organization. DHS Students Organize to Fight Cancer

Local teens part of effort to lead Relay for Life for Deerfield and Highland Park.

A world with more birthdays and less cancer is the goal of Deerfield High School students Jessie Arenson, Jessie Stein and Samantha Soloway. The three young women are youth volunteer organizers for the Deerfield-Highland Park Relay For Life June 9 and 10 at Deerfield High School’s Adams Field. The annual event raises money to fight the disease and increases awareness, according to spokesperson Janet Pacanowski. A reason Arenson is part of the youth leadership is the loss of her grandmother to cancer. She wants to do something to make sure others have plenty of opportunities to spend birthdays with loved ones. “My reason to relay is for prevention,” Arenson said. “My grandmother taught me about what it means to be a strong person and a …
