The loss of her father-in-law inspires Betsy Brint to appreciate the value of spending your later years on the North Shore.
Palm Beach. Palm Springs. Scottsdale. Santa Fe. Anywhere in California. Or, to be honest, anywhere but here. This is a game I’ve been playing with my husband for years. Each year, magazines rank cities based on their appeal as potential retirement communities. Some have mountains. Some overlook oceans. All promise sun, golf, warmth and miles of trails into the abyss of future indeterminate happiness. But until a major family event this week, I hadn’t realized that I have been overlooking the most obvious retirement location option. I’ll call it the Dorothy Gale backyard epiphany. That’s right. Dear Ms. Brint, I'm so sorry to have learned of your father-in-law's passing. I'm glad he had a full life and enjoyed his later years in Highland Park with his family. I also have come home to roost, along with my twin sister Iris, and husband Joe. We left New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina and were lucky enough to find our way back here.
