Inspired by the school shootings in Newtown, Conn., Faith Lutheran Church of Lake Forest is considering sponsoring a comfort dog.
Faith Lutheran Church in Lake Forest is considering sponsoring a golden retriever comfort dog through Addison-based Lutheran Church Charities (LLC) for sensitive situations in which a furry friend might work wonders to ease feelings of trauma for children and adults alike, reported the Chicago Tribune. Church members met Sunday to discuss the idea and meet three comfort dogs, which can cost about $10,000 because of training and related expenses. In its weekly announcements, the church posted that "to our knowledge, there is no comfort dog program of this type in the central/east Lake County area. Things happen at any time and place." The comfort dog could be used at area hospitals, including the VA hospital, schools and nursing homes, …

Do you believe Obama's gun control proposals will help prevent school shootings?
Another school shooting took place in Atlanta Thursday, the Huffington Post reports. A student opened fire at Price Middle School, shooting a 14-year-old in the neck before being stopped by an armed officer at the school. The wounded boy was taken to a nearby hospital and later discharged, the website reports. The school does have metal detectors, and it’s unclear how the weapon got inside, Fox Atlanta reports. This incident is the latest school shooting in recent months. Most notably, 26 people, mostly elementary school children, were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in December. The Newtown shooting sparked a nationwide debate over gun control. President Obama made several proposals regarding the topic in mid…

New security enhancements at Deerfield and Highland Park High Schools include discussions about adding a full time police officer at Deerfield. Highland Park has had one since 2000.
(Update at 11:20 a.m.) The presence of an armed police officer at Deerfield High School is being considered but not yet a certainty, according to sources from Township High School District 113 and the Village of Deerfield. As reported on Patch in November, the Village and officials from the District have been talking about putting a community resource officer at Deerfield High School on a full time basis but nothing has been decided. Both Deerfield Assistant Village Manager Andrew Lichterman and District 113 Communications Director Natalie Kaplan said no final decision has been made. Deerfield would hire an officer who would be assigned to full time duty at the school, according to Lichterman. The cost would be shared by the Village and …

President Obama presented several proposals for increased gun control this week.
President Obama made several proposals for increased gun control this week. Among the president's proposals were background checks for all gun sales, even those by private sellers, reinstating and strengtening the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, the New York Times reported. The White House's entire 15-page proposal can be downloaded here. We also attached video of the president discussing the plan to this post. Other aspects of the plan include putting 1,000 more school resource officers and counselors in schools and improving mental health services. "We are going to need to work on making access to mental health care as as easy as access to a gun," Obama said. The proposals come …

The NRA reacted to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting by suggesting a variety of causes for mass shootings and suggesting that armed police officers be station in every school.
The NRA called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around U.S. schools Friday in the group's first public statement since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." A gunman killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conneticut on Dec. 14. Twenty of the victims were children. The shooting has ignited a debate over gun control. Vice President Joe Biden will lead the Obama administrations efforts on the issue, CNN reported. The NRA, however, argued that more guns, not less, is the answer to mass shootings. "We …

This was an inspiring presentation; the dogs are well cared for, trained by prisoners at Dwight, placed with Lutheran churches in Illinois and beyond, and cared for in homes where, when their vests are removed, they can be dogs who run and play. We can pray that one of these beautiful, calm Golden Retrievers will come to live in Lake Forest for this community's caring needs. tallpd   more ›
