For one high school senior, it is a time for family while others spend time with friends. One group is building houses in Costa Rica.
While the term “Senior Spring Break” makes me think about kids partying and drinking on the beaches of Mexico, I feel that many seniors this year have taken a different approach to the last break of their high school careers. I am currently on a trip in Aspen with my family, not my friends. I have also run into multiple seniors on break with their families as well. The last school break from high school should be one to remember. I believe that spending time with family, instead of friends, is the best kind of senior Spring Break. Once we go off to college, we will make new friends whom we will spend time with each day. Family, on the other hand, will only be seen a few times a year. Choosing to spend this break with family or with …

Supporters plant 'Promise Garden' as part of a fundraiser for research to find a cure.
Hope hit the ground...walking Saturday for senior citizens and younger victims of Alzheimer's disease, as hundreds of supporters hoping for a cure took to the rainy path that surrounds Sunset Woods Park in Highland Park. Many attendees dawned purple T-shirts that read, “Walk to End Alzheimer's,” and carried flower windmills—each color representing caregivers, victims, supporters and those who had the disease and have died. Supporters began planting the windmills at the start of the walk in “Promise Garden,” a small, designated field by the park entrance. High School columnist Jacob Perlson writes about his final days at DHS.
I started writing this column on a Friday at 1:30 p.m., during seventh period. But I guess I should stop thinking about things in terms of the DHS schedule because my last day of class was Tuesday. So, I started writing this column on Friday at 1:30 p.m… Central Standard Time… sitting outside in the sun, my four years of high school behind me. I am by no means done with school. A minimum of eight years of learning and studying stand between me and the letters I want at the end of my name. Realistically, the learning and studying will never be over. All the hard work and fun of high school, however, are done. And I think this fact is starting to sink in. Before Tuesday for about a month, my little brother had been asking me, “Is it weird …

It's not all about Mexico anymore.
Everything senior year is the senior something. It’s the most important one of all four years and it’s supposed to be the biggest and best. One looks forward to their senior homecoming and their senior summer more than they do for the others. But this sentiment seems to ring the most true for senior spring break. This week is supposed to be special. It’s something parents and students believe is worked for and earned. In previous years, senior spring break has been groups of friends going to Mexico with a few parents. During these weeks, the beaches of places like Puerto Vallarta and Cancún are filled with families and college students from all over, but a great deal of high school seniors from the north shore as well. Plenty of people …

DHS Senior Jacob Perlson talks about how his life has changed with a little more free time.
Swimming ending has freed up about 19 hours per week. If you include all the additional eating time, it’s probably freed up about a whole day. With this time, I thought I’d get to bed earlier, get my work done more quickly and efficiently, and I would have more time to do what I wanted. I was wrong on all of those accounts except for the last. My schedule opening up has allowed me to see concerts on school nights and spend time with friends on weekdays, but it has not caused me to work well rested with focus and intensity. Instead, it has made way for what I can safely say is my first real bout of senioritis. I’ve written briefly about senioritis before, but my experience was limited then. It was like me giving marriage advice. I was …

DHS senior considers what high school accomplishments mean after graduation.
The weeks on both ends of Deerfield High School’s two-week winter break are special ones. The weeks before are filled with anticipation and the weeks after can be adequately described as bracing yourself for the meteoroid we call final exams to come crashing down. (I know that’s a little melodramatic. There’s just a lot to do before impact.) These two little stretches of the year are vastly different in these respects, but one common thread runs through them both: visitors. Graduates from previous years come back to school for at least part of the day to see their teachers, sit in on their favorite classes, spend time with friends and try to keep up during a band/orchestra rehearsal or athletic practice. It’s great to see them, and their …
