Civil lawsuit against convicted murderer Marni Yang results in major paycheck for victim’s family.
Almost four years after Rhoni Reuter was shot and killed in her Deerfield apartment, the victim’s family can start trying to move on. On Wednesday a Cook County jury awarded Reuter’s family $40 million in a case against her convicted killer Marni Yang . That judgment wraps up a civil lawsuit filed by the Reuters. Back in March Yang was found guilty of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. Yang received two life sentences for gunning Reuter down at her Deerfield apartment. Reuter was six-months pregnant with the child of former Bears player Shaun Gayle at the time of the shooting. On the stand, Gayle admitted to jurors that he was also having a sexual relationship with Yang. Related: Marni Yang Admits Deerfield…

Victim's family expresses anger and sadness.
In handing down two life sentences to convicted killer Marni Yang Friday, Judge Christopher Stride said the case stood out in his 20 years of experience in criminal courts. It wasn’t unusual because of the amount of media attention that surrounded the killing because the victim, Rhoni Reuter, was pregnant with the unborn child of former Chicago Bears player Shaun Gayle. It was, he told Yang, becauase of “the methodical, meticulous and maniacal manner in which you committed this crime." Yang received two concurrent life sentences — one for Reuter’s death and one for the death of her unborn child — nearly five years after she plotted to kill Reuter in her Deerfield condominium. Yang, who had been romantically involved with Gayle, saw Reuter …

Marni Yang murder trial makes national TV.
Dateline and 20/20 hit close to home Friday night for local residents. Both NBC and ABC aired pieces on Deerfield’s high-profile murder investigation that started after the slaying of a pregnant woman back in 2007. If you recall, Rhoni Reuter was gunned down in her Deerfield condo, she was shot six-times. At the time of the shooting she was pregnant with the child of former Bear’s player Shaun Gayle. Deerfield investigator Juan Mazariegos and detective Vince Nichols walked Dateline reporter Rob Stafford through their investigation and how they came to arrest Marni Yang. Yang was also sexually involved with Gayle. In March a jury found Yang guilty of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. Her sentencing is …

Patch has obtained a tape recording of convicted killer Marni Yang detailing the deadly shooting to her best friend.
According to prosecutors, Marni Yang made one “big mistake” when it came to her plan to murder 42-year-old Rhoni Reuter back in 2007: she told her best friend about it afterwards. "I took the first shot," police secretly recorded Yang telling Christi Paschen after the murder at a restaurant in Arlington Heights. "I remember screaming cause at that point I realized we are now at the point of no return.'" Last week a jury convicted Yang of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. Authorities say she brutally shot and killed Reuter at her Deerfield condo. At the time, Reuter was six-months pregnant with the child of former Bears player Shaun Gayle. Yang was also romantically involved with the Super Bowl winner. …

Judge announces verdict after four hours of jury deliberations Tuesday.
The woman accused of killing the pregnant girlfriend of former Bears player Shaun Gayle was convicted in court Tuesday. Marni Yang was found guilty on all counts of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. Prosecutors say Yang “executed” 42-year-old Rhoni Reuter in her Deerfield condo in 2007 because she wanted to “eliminate the competition.” At the time of the murder, Reuter was six months pregnant with Gayle’s child. Yang was also romantically involved with the Super Bowl winner. Gayle and Reuter’s family remained silent while the verdict was read but rejoiced afterwards. “Justice is served,” Gayle said during a press conference. “It’s been a long time coming.” “Needless to say we’re overjoyed with the jury’s …

Judge announces verdict after four hours of jury deliberations.
Marni Yang was found guilty of first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child Tuesday. The jury convicted her of killing 42-year-old Rhoni Reuter in her Deerfield condo back in 2007. Reuter was six months pregnant with the child of former Bears player Shaun Gayle. At the time, Yang was also romantically involved with the Super Bowl winner. The prosecution described the murder as an "execution" in court Tuesday during closing arguments. “A very planned, thought out execution,” lawyers said and claimed Yang was obsessed with "eliminating her competition." Gayle along with Reuter’s family were in court when the verdict was handed down, as well as members of Yang’s family. Yang showed no emotion while the verdict was being …
Closing arguments set to begin in court at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
The defense rested Monday without Marni Yang taking the stand. The 43-year-old is on trial for first-degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. She’s accused of shooting and killing 42-year-old Rhoni Reuter at her Deerfield condo back in 2007. At the time Reuter was six months pregnant with the child of former Bears player Shaun Gayle. Prosecutors say Yang was obsessed with Gayle and wanted to "eliminate the competition." Before the defense rested Monday, Yang’s lawyers called three witnesses including Yang’s mother, a Deerfield neighbor of Reuter and an assistant commander with the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force. Yang’s mother, Francine Merar, of Niles confirmed that her daughter had dropped off a case of guns at her…

Prosecutors play recordings in court of Marni Yang discussing shooting with long-time friend, Christi Paschen.
More then a year after 42-year-old Rhoni Reuter was shot and killed in her Deerfield condo authorities got a major break in the murder investigation. After strapping a body wire on Marni Yang’s best friend, police recorded the murder suspect allegedly discussing the shooting on tape. “She opened up the door and saw a dark skinned person and she started screaming and I took the first shot,” officials recorded Marni Yang telling Christi Paschen over soup at Denny’s in Arlington Heights on March 2, 2009. That’s about 17-months after Yang’s accused of gunning Reuter down. Reuter was the girlfriend of former Bears player Shaun Gayle and was six months pregnant at the time. Paschen told jurors Thursday Yang discussed her plans to kill Reuter …

I hope when Marni's Chicago home is sold (currently on the market at $399K), that all of the money will go to Rhoni's family. I am wondering though, what if in the future she does a book or movie deal, and by some loop hole gets it paid to one of her adult kids? Would the Reuter family be able to go after that money? I hope so. Also, I am wondering if there is any update on her attorney's promise…   more ›
