Faith in Action matches its givers and recipients carefully to form lasting relationships.
The stated purpose of Southeast Lake County Faith in Action Volunteers is to help older adults maintain their independence, according to Executive Director Robbie Boudreau, but the purpose could just as easily be creation of friendships. No one may know that better than Mitchell Filip of Highland Park. The organization has improved the lives of his family and the people they have touched, including both Bob Rosenbacher and Larry Ward of Deerfield. Good stories outshine holiday fare at Southeast Lake County Faith in Action Volunteers holiday party.
What began as an effort to help others through Southeast Lake County Faith in Action Volunteers (SELCFIA) has turned into friendship between volunteers and care recipients. This phenomenon was overflowing the room at SELCFIA’s annual holiday party Friday at the Patty Turner Center in Deerfield as many of the volunteers served a pre holiday lunch to more than 40 participants in the program sharing the meal with them. More than 80 attended the event. Joyce Friedman, 71, of Highland Park grew up in the Chicago area. Then she acted on Broadway in New York and spent time as a hand model in California before returning to the area a few years ago to help her ill parents. As shoppers scurry about Deerfield seeking holiday gifts, there are also plenty of opportunities to give the gift of yourself whether volunteering time or making donations to those in need. Here are some of Patch’s suggestions. 1. West Deerfield Township Food Pantry. The Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m. for donations. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison is always looking for volunteers to help stack food but call first at 847-945-8317 before coming by.
