Businesses Reach Out to Wonder! Customers

Two places offer discounts after Deerfield superstore closes.

Local businesses have begun offering discounts to customers that lost money when the Deerfield children's superstore Wonder! abruptly closed its doors on Monday. Beanstalk in Highland Park is offering a 15 percent discount on purchases of $50 or more to people who present a receipt that proves they paid for a class or membership at Wonder!, which was only open for three months. Starland Creativity Center in Deerfield offers $100 off one of its spring classes, which cost between $150 to $200. "We share a common customer base," said Starland staff member Lauren Norberg. "Kids loved playing at Wonder!, and we want to have a place for those kids to go to enjoy some fun, play-date learning." The children's superstore sent notice out that it …

Starland’s New Home Moves Forward

Village Board approves grant of special use permit on Pine Street church property.

A special use permit to allow Starland Creative Center to operate in the True Way Presbyterian Church on Pine Street moved forward with unanimous action by the Deerfield Village Board Monday after spirited discussion for the public.  The Board approved the unanimous recommendation of the Plan Commission to grant the special use permit to Starland, a fixture in Deerfield, to move from its current facility on Robert York Road to the Pine Street location.  Mayor Harriet Rosenthal directed Village attorney Peter Colbentz to draft an ordinance which will be presented to the board at its next meeting Jan. 17. Several former schools have been taken over by or remained park land. In fact, the Park District owns most land that schools stand on. This is an example of a former school that is not park land today. Maplewwod and Woodland parks are examples of former schools that became parks. Nice parks, we just don't need more at this point.   more ›
