Garrett Plans ‘Active’ Retirement

After 14 years in the Illinois General Assembly, state Sen. Susan Garrett gets ready to move her activism to a different arena. She recalls early days serving with President Obama.

Making Illinois government a little more transparent with high ethical standards is the legacy retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) hopes to leave when her 14-year career in the Illinois General Assembly ends Tuesday. Garrett, who grew up in Deerfield and has lived most of her adult life in Lake Forest, made some of her strongest contributions to issues important to the northern suburbs like transportation on rails and roads. Earlier: Photo Gallery: Colleagues Roast Garrett, May “I hope that will be in ethics reform in many different levels of leadership including the tollway, highways and Metra,” Garrett said when asked to pick one thing he believes has drawn her attention most. Poll: Should Mall Stores Have Armed Guards?

A year ago, readers felt a Northbrook Court jewelry store was right to have an armed security guard. Patch wants to know readers’ views in light of the shootings in Newtown and Oregon.

(Update on Dec. 18 at 5 a.m.) Friday’s murder of 26 people including 20 children by a gunman in Newtown, CT, and more gunplay at a mall outside Portland a few days before prompted Patch to take a new look at the use of an armed guard at  C.D. Peacock’s Northbrook Court jewelry store. A year ago, Patch observed the guard and asked readers how they felt. A majority supported the idea. Patch wants to know if recent events have changed minds in the area. Patch is running a new poll and will publish the results next week. Patch contacted Peacock President Bob Baumgardner for a comment. He did not return the call. A year ago, state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) questioned the wisdom of the use of an armed guard in a mall store. Now, she …

Normal , what is "normal"? A setting on a hair dryer, a place in Illinois or an illusion that everything is okay? Are people normal, is crime normal, was Sandy Hook...normal? New Deerfield Water Plant Is Nearly Ready

Village gave residents a seamless transition while keeping costs low. State Sen. Susan Garrett honored for providing assistance.

With Deerfield’s new Wastewater Reclamation Facility 95 percent complete and fully financed, the Village officially opened the new facility with a flag raising ceremony Monday and the best part may be how little residents would have noticed the two-year project. The new facility containing state of the art technology and built in the most environmentally sound way possible, was constructed around the original 1954 plant to avoid any possible inconvenience to residents. Get local news in a daily email from Patch. It's like getting a free newspaper. Learn more. “It was created around the old building,” Mayor Harriet Rosenthal said. “It’s a green center. Morrison, Friedman Intensify Attacks

Candidates to replace Susan Garrett in State Senate bicker over flip flopping, a woman’s right to choose and personal integrity.

The campaign between Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman and West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) intensified into an all out war of words Monday. Morrison, the Democrat, issued a news release accusing Friedman of transforming himself from a Tea Party Republican when he ran in the 2010 GOP primary for Congress against Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) and five other rivals to a moderate in 2012. Earlier: State Senate Candidates Switched Parties “There are a number of issues that Dr. Friedman is silent about and a number of issues he has flip-flopped on,” Morrison said. “From his support of the Tea Party, his affiliation with the NRA, and his support of the Paul …

PHOTO GALLERY: Colleagues Roast Garrett, May

With their political careers’ sunset on the horizon, state Sen. Susan Garrett and state Rep. Karen May were roasted and toasted at a dinner in their honor given by the Lake County Democratic Women Monday.

When a call from state Sen. Susan Garret (D-Lake Forest) appears on state Sen. Jeff Schoenberg’s (D-Evanston) cell phone, the initials ‘MSG’ appear.  “Now most people think of ‘MSG’ as ‘Ms. Susan Garrett’ (but) it’s also known as monosodium glutamate,” Schoenberg said. “What do the two have in common? Too much, you get a headache!”  Garrett, who will retire at the end of this year after serving three terms in the Illinois Senate, was just one target at Monday night’s Lake County Democratic Women’s toast and roast featuring a cross-section of local and state politicians at Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest.  The other bull’s-eye was on state Rep. Karen May (D-Highland Park), who will also retire this year after serving six terms in the Illinois …

Deerfield Rotary Honors Sen. Garrett

Retiring state senator becomes Paul Harris Fellow, one of Rotary’s top honors.

State Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest) received a surprise at lunch Thursday when she attended a regular Deerfield Rotary meeting. As Garrett approaches retirement in January after serving 14 years in the Illinois General Assembly, Rotary surprised the Deerfield native by naming her a Paul Harris Fellow, one of the highest honors the organization can bestow, according to Rotarian Bob Rosenbacher. “A world of peace and good will comes closer to reality today as Susan Garrett becomes a Paul Harris Fellow,” Rotarian and Deerfield Village Trustee Barbara Struthers said presenting the award. Harris was one of the founders of Rotary and the Rotary Foundation. He helped instill the values of selflessness into the organization. Struthers …

Wisconsin Investigates Lake County Clerk

Racine County district attorney looks into activities of Willard Helander during Wisconsin recall election. State Sen. Garrett recalls earlier incidents with clerk.

A complaint filed against Lake County Clerk Willard Helander with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board arising from her activity during the June 5 recall election was not the first time she has been embroiled in election day controversy. State Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, recalls disagreements with Helander early in the veteran legislator’s career, including events that led to legislation introduced by Garrett in the Illinois General Assembly. In the recent Wisconsin incident, an election crime complaint was filed against Helander last week under Chapter 12 of Wisconsin law, according to Reid Magney, the spokesperson for the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. “When a complaint is filed under Chapter 12, I cannot …

Friedman, Morrison Open Offices, Trade Barbs

Candidates for state Senate talk about choice and experience.

The two candidates hoping to succeed retiring state Sen. Susan Garrett, D-Lake Forest, opened their campaign offices a mile apart Saturday and wasted no time differentiating themselves from each other. West Deerfield Township Supervisor Julie Morrison, the Democratic contender, criticized the lack of government experience of Highland Park pediatrician Arie Friedman, the Republican choice. She claimed he has never been responsible to citizens and taxpayers. Earlier: Pension Reform Awaits State Senate Candidates “I am the only candidate in the race who has held elective office,” Morrison said to more than 50 people at the formal office opening. “I know what it’s like to be accountable to taxpayers and my opponent does not.
