Ideas to teach your kids to be more grateful and thankful for what they have
Thanksgiving is the perfect time of year to work on teaching your kids to be more thankful for what they have. We get so caught up in the Holiday madness of traveling, hosting dinners, shopping, and making Holiday wish lists that sometimes it's nice to take a breath, sit down as a family and talk with your kids about how lucky your family is, how grateful we should be, and how to say thank you for more than just gifts. It's a tricky concept to teach young children, who are natually self-centered, but by starting when they are young you can help lay the foundation to be grateful and think of others. We try a variety of activities to help our kids develop more of an attitude of gratitude. Here are some ideas we've found to create a more …

A comic to help readers celebrate Turkey Day.
Happy Thanksgiving from Patch! Enjoy this comic from artist Drew Lerman and have a terrific Turkey Day.
It’s all about being together.
Thanksgiving is a great, very American holiday. Most of my family looks forward to the turkey, stuffing, and potatoes. The holiday is the perfect excuse to eat until you can’t eat anymore because calories don’t really count on Thanksgiving, right? But not me. The food is really not what Thanksgiving is about for me-at least not anymore. Although, I don’t think I was ever a lover of turkey or pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving to me is about family and friends. And taking the day, or hopefully days to slow down, be together, enjoy each other without pressures of work, school, homework, meetings or anything. We do not typically travel anywhere for Thanksgiving, which I enjoy. The kids are off school the majority of the Thanksgiving week so we can go…
Does political talk go well with turkey, dressing and pumpkin pie? Or does it just make for a dyspeptic holiday?
With the Presidential election less than a year away and the Illinois Appellate Court extending Congressional filing dates, there's plenty to talk about. As you celebrate the Thanksgiving Day holiday this year, consider the following. The next time you do so, the 2012 presidential election campaign will have just ended. Just today Patch learned candidates for Congress will not be filing their petitions between Nov. 28 and Dec. 5. The period will now run from Dec. 23 through Dec. 27 because of the litigation over the proposed map according to a news release from the Illinois State Board of Elections. So for those inclined to campaign at the Thanksgiving table, 2011 is it. But is that a good idea? Stories of political arguments ruining …
The Butterball turkey talk-line can help chefs avert Thanksgiving disasters.
It's Thanksgiving, the guests are only hours away and your turkey still is frozen. What can you do? Have no fear, the Butterball Turkey talk-line is open and ready to help. For more than 20 years Butterball representatives have talked turkey. The questions run the gamut, from experienced cooks simply looking for tips to make the perfect bird, to panicked hosts trying to avert disaster. "We have many different hats that we wear," said Tara-Rose Groberski, who has worked on the turkey talk line for 10 years. "We're there to alleviate their angst. Will tell them to take a deep breath and walk them through what they have to do." The first turkey talk line had six home economists answer 11,000 phone calls in 1981. This year more than 50 …
