Candidates Campaign in Downtown Deerfield

Contenders for six offices greet voters in downtown Deerfield Saturday.

With the April 9 election a week away, candidates were busy meeting voters Saturday and doing some voting of their own. Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, who is unopposed in her bid for reelection, hosted an event Starbucks Saturday morning along with her Village Board slate—incumbents Alan Farkas, Mary Oppenheim and Barbara Struthers. Get local news in a daily email from Patch. It's like getting a free newspaper. Learn more. While Struthers, Oppenheim, Farkas and Rosenthal were talking to people over coffee, three contenders for the Township High School District 113 Board of Education—Mark Mulert, Julie Gordon and Stacey Meyer—showed up to communicate their message. Annette Lidawer and David Greenberg are the others seeking the three seats. …

Referendum Campaign Picks up as Early Voting Opens

Patch reviews all coverage of the plan to renovate Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools.

Ever since the Township High School District 113 Board of Education voted Jan. 14 to place an $89 million referendum on the April 9 ballot to help fund a $114 million renovation of Highland and Deerfield High Schools, there has been no shortage of opinion. Before the Board made its decision, citizens were engaged with numerous meetings and six different committees involving members of the community at large as well as teachers and administration since shortly after a $133 million referendum failed two years ago. The debate mounted the last week with the start of early voting and a blog on Patch. Take a look what has been written since the Board vote in January, including letters to the editor and blogs expressing personal opinions. For …

Readers Say Yes to $89 Million Referendum

Patch poll results show a 2-1 edge for supporters of renovation plan.

With two community groups going all out over an $89 million referendum to renovate Highland Park and Deerfield High Schools, Patch readers seem to be siding with those in favor of proposal. As Education First and Community Leaders Educating and Advocating for the Referendum in 113 (C.L.E.A.R. 113) are doing everything they can to persuade voters, 33 of the 49 people responding to an unscientific survey want to see the measure pass. Sixteen are opposed. Earlier: Where Do You Stand on the $89 Million Referendum? People on both sides pulled no punches when expressing their views. Susan Kozloff does not like the way Township High School District 113 has been spending money and does not want to let it have more. “My kids recently graduated and …

Wow.. Sounds like Bryce Robertson is the World Champion expert on all things Financial or fiducuary.. I for one would appreciate some unbiased analysis on the financial ramifications of the impending deferred Pension meltdown which we likely to be severely impacted by and if there is any intention to accept the realities of the continuing unresponsive economy when we determine as a group how much…   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Meyer for 113 Board

Writer supports Stacey Meyer for District 113 School Board.

I write this letter in support of Stacey Meyer's candidacy for the District 113 School Board. Stacey is a Deerfield resident and mother of a DHS student.  Stacey's professional experience, understanding of a broad spectrum of educational issues and ability to effectively collaborate with whomever she interacts make her perfectly suited to help the district navigate the many challenges it will face in the coming years. As Program Director for the Schuler Scholar Program, Stacey has the responsibility of working with eight distinct school districts, and through this work has amassed critical insight as to how districts can maintain rigor while being sensitive to students from a wide range of backgrounds and with varying academic needs. If …

Letter to the Editor: Lidawer for 113 Board

State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) backs Annette Lidawer for Township High School District 113 Board of Education.

I am writing this letter in support of Annette Lidawer’s re-election to the District 113 School Board.  I have had the pleasure of knowing Annette over these past years through her work in the community. Having seen her desire to grapple with the pension issue, I am particularly interested in her continuing to serve. Our State legislature is in dire need of local elected officials who will work with us to tackle this problem. I say this as a leading advocate for pension reform in the Illinois legislature. Specifically, Annette has served as an active advocate for the schools. She has: ·         Introduced cutting edge technologies to the school environment ·         Implemented standardized teacher review ·         Helped design the new …

Gymnastics Coach Performs Double Duty

Doug Foerch is now the head coach for the varsity boys gymnastics teams at Deerfield and Highland Park high schools.

What began 10 years ago as a co-op boys gymnastics team at Township High School District 113 has now grown into separate varsity teams for Deerfield High School and Highland Park High School. And leading both teams is Hall of Fame coach Doug Foerch, who told the Chicago Tribune that it's an unusual arrangement, but one that makes sense. "I think it's going to be a lot of fun for the kids and a lot of fun for me," he said. "A part of the reason behind this is that we're trying to expand the sport. We have enough kids where we feel confident we can do that and run two quality programs. To me, that's an accomplishment in itself." Per the Illinois High School Association, Foerch can coach both schools' teams as long as they don't mingle while …

Wow, sharing the common values finally makes sense for someone. Let me just mention girls gymnastics coaching in HPHS: it sucks big time, plain and simple and is the major reason why some good gymnasts left the team. And NO, it is not old gymnasium's fault. And to be completely honest watching them perform from the above balcony is great because the gymnasium is just the right size.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Lidawer for 113 Board

Readers encourage reelection of Annette Lidawer.

To the Editor:  We enthusiastically support the re-election of Annette Lidawer to the District 113 School Board.  Annette is an attorney and experienced educational lobbyist, and has been a leader in fighting impending cutbacks in federal and state funding that could seriously impact our District.  As Annette demonstrated during her first term on the 113 Board, she is exceptionally intelligent, fiscally responsible, energetic, dedicated to the community, open to input and passionate about education.  She also understands the nuances of budgets, pensions, financing, contracts with vendors, curriculum, teacher review, technology, safety and, of course, our facilities.  The District 113 Board needs the expertise of Annette Lidawer, who is the…
