Students from Village’s elementary and middle schools test their mettle against area’s best.
Students representing six Deerfield schools took part in the Regional Spelling Feb. 27 at South Park Elementary School. Earlier: Kyla Guru Repeats as Spelling Bee Champ Competitors were Kyla Guru of South Park Elementary School, Sofia Li, Caruso Middle School; Brett Toban, Kipling Elementary School; Matthew Seltzer, Wilmot Elementary School; and Halle Mangurten, Walden Elementary School. None of the participants advanced to the Lake County Finals. Four other champions crowned in District 109 schools.
South Park Elementary School fifth grader Kyla Guru successfully defended her championship recently in the Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Spelling Bee competitions. Guru, who won a year ago, did it again this year. Earlier: Kyla Guru Makes Spelling a Family Affair Sofia Li, a Caruso Middle School seventh grader, won her school’s title while Brett Toban, a fourth grade student, won at Kipling Elementary School. At Wilmot Elementary School, Matthew Seltzer, a fifth grader was the winner while fifth grader Halle Mangurten won at Walden Elementary School. Deerfield Public Schools District 109 has been given high honors by the Illinois State Board of Education this week. The district has four schools named to the Academic Honor Roll and given the 2012 Academic Excellence Award. Kipling Elementary, South Park Elementary, Walden Elementary and Wilmot Elementary are among 454 Illinois schools receiving the award. The schools honored all sustained high academic performances over the past three years. According to the Illinois State Board of Education, schools who receive the Academic Excellence Award must have at least 90 percent of elementary and middle students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and math for three straight years. Students in Deerfield Public Schools District 109 mimicked their parents in a number of ways a week ago when they too headed to the polls to voice their preference for President of the United States. In addition to voting for President in four of the schools—Shepard Middle School, Caruso Middle School, Walden Elementary School and Kipling Elementary School—grade school students chose their favorite books or charities. Jonah Winter takes first place in competition between grades four through eight.
When it comes to chess, Walden Elementary School fourth grader Jonah Winter does not let his elders scare him. Winter won the overall first place award May 12 at the Deerfield Park District’s chess tournament coming out ahead of all players in grades four through eight. The top team at the tourney was the contingent from South Park Elementary School of Danica Sun, Ethan Lesser, Patrick Carrow, Eric Rosenson, Purvendra Bhatt and Joshua Rosenson. Carrow also took the championship trophy among the third graders and Rosenson did the same in the fifth grade grouping. Walden students have created a special African art exhibit.
Artwork created by students in the four elementary schools of Deerfield Public Schools District 109 will be on display from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Kipling Elementary School. The annual art fair Saturday has been going on for 31 years. The efforts of students from Kipling, South Park Elementary School, Walden Elementary School and Wilmot Elementary School will on the walls for the two hours. “This event is a highlight in the District every year,” District Communications Director Cathy Kedjidjian said. “Our art teachers choose exciting projects that really bring out the creative talent in the students; it's always amazing to see just how much of that talent there is in one place." Kipling contest goes into overtime.
Caruso Middle School eighth grader Pranav Guru, Walden fifth grade student Xander Ambrose and Tess Ballis, a Kipling fourth grader, won their schools’ Spelling Bees Friday and Monday and will advance to Sectional competition Feb. 22 at South Park Elementary School. Guru outlasted defending champion Ben Edelstein, also an eighth grader, in the 12th round Monday. At Walden, Emily Han joined Ambrose in the winner’s circle by winning the fourth grade contest. Ambrose was the fourth grade champ last year. The Kipling contest began Friday but continued into Monday before Ballis outlasted her fellow students.
