Gallery: DHS Cross Country Team Places Ninth at State

Gold turns in best time ever to earn all state honors.

An all state performance by Alex Gold paced the Deerfield High School boys’ cross country team to a ninth place finish out of 25 team today in the State Meet in Peoria. Gold ran a career best 14:53 time over the three-mile course at Peoria’s Detweiller Park to finish 17th out of 210 runners. A senior, Gold finished 35th a year ago in 15:09 as the only Warrior in the State Finals. Earlier: Freshman Pledge, Hard Work Put Warriors in State Meet "It was his first time under 15 (minutes)," Assistant Coach Kip Gasper said. "It was an incredibly fast field." Freshman Pledge, Hard Work Put Warriors in State Meet

Five seniors on Deerfield High School cross country team dedicated themselves to ending 32-year drought when they were freshmen.

A goal set four years ago and nourished in 2011 with all but one Warrior on the outside looking in comes full flower after 33 years for the Deerfield High School cross country team as it competes in the State Meet at noon Saturday in Peoria. When Alex Gold, Jordan Abosch, Bryan Rosenberg, Shai Farhi and Max Rich were freshmen, they set a goal to reach the State Finals as a team by the time they were seniors. No Warrior cross country team had done that since 1980. Boys’ Cross Country Team Wins Regional

Boys’ Cross Country Oct. 20  The Final Score:  1. Deerfield 35, 2. Vernon Hills 50, 3. Grayslake Central 61, 4. Lakes 127, 5. Antioch 150, 6. Woodstock North 160, 7. Carmel 163, 8. Wauconda 194, 9. Grayslake North 201. Warriors’ Star Performers:             Alex Gold won the individual championship in 16:07.28. Shai Farhi earned a sixth place finish (16:46.17) and Jordan Abosch was seventh (16:51.63). Vernon Hills 10.  Warriors’ Star Performers:             Mindy Borovsky and Ariel Lozovsky qualified for the State Tournament in singles while the tandem of Jenna Borzak and Jorrie Fox made it in doubles. Who’s Next:   Borovsky, Lozovsky, Borzak and Fox compete in the State Finals Thursday through Saturday in Buffalo Grove.  The Bottom Line:      Borovsky breezed through her first three matches in straight sets losing only three games before falling in the final for second place. Sept. 8  The Final Score:  Deerfield finishes second out of 13 teams in the Lake Park Harvey Braus Invitational with 74 points. Warriors’ Star Performer:               Alex Gold, Jordan Abosch, Shai Farhi, Maor Kramer and Charles Nash earned medals. Other Notable Warrior Performances:       Bryan Rosenberg and Max Rich added to the Deerfield effort. Who’s Next:   The Warriors run against Maine East, Maine West and Glenbrook North at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Maine East.  The Bottom Line:      “The varsity ran (one) of the best team races literally in the last 40 years of DHS cross country,” Coach Jeremy Kaufman said. Girls’ Cross Country Warriors Have Experience

Veteran group and change in class give hope for season.

Last Year’s Record:        The Warriors were 8-2 in Central Suburban League competition with a second place finish.  Last Year’s Highlights:       Deerfield finished fourth in the Regional sending the entire team to the Sectional Meet where the squad placed 17th.  Season Opener:          The Warriors open their season with the Lake County Invitational at 5:30 p.m. August 29 at the Lakewood Forest Preserve in Wauconda.  Top Returning Warriors:     Hadley Lloyd, Abbey Osborn Elizabeth Zwart and Ellen Kershke.  Leading Newcomers:            Lauren Klein.  Season Outlook:          The Warriors are returning the core of last year’s team which is one reason Coach Jeff Beaumont is optimistic. “Our experience running as a pack should be a strength…

Gold Heads to State Cross Country Meet

Warrior runner grabs 19th in Schaumburg Sectional.

Deerfield High School junior Alex Gold carries the hopes of the Warriors and the Central Suburban League North Division when he runs in the State Cross Country Meet Saturday in Peoria.  Gold finished 19th in the Schaumburg Sectional Saturday at Busse Woods with a time of $15:36.47 over the three-mile course to lead the Warriors. Deerfield finished 12th as a team with 300 points. Barrington won the title with a score of 91.  Other Warriors competing in the Sectional race were Makoto Bowering, Shai Farhi, Jordan Abosch, Scott Pierce, Michael Fosco and Michael Schraiber.  In the Sectional, Gold shaved 15 seconds off his third place time of 15:51 in the Libertyville Regional on Oct. 22.
