Guagliardo, DiGioia and Stein help set new standard for Deerfield High School program.
Three members of the Deerfield High School field hockey team—JoElla Guagliardo, Kezia DiGioia and Jessie Stein—were recently named all state selections putting an exclamation mark on an improved season over 2011. Guagliardo, a junior, was also named the team’s most valuable player for the second year in a row, according to Coach Stacy Wood. “She is a major factor in moving the ball up the field from our defensive third to our offensive third,” Wood said. Deerfield High School squad falls to defending champ New Trier.
The Deerfield High School field hockey team finished an improved season Tuesday falling to defending state champion, New Trier in the quarterfinals of the State Tournament, 3-0, according to a report on the CSL Insider. Like in the first game between the Warriors and the Trevians, the game was scoreless for the first half. Deerfield was led by strong defensive play by Meili Burns, Jessie Stein and Maeve Derrig, Emily Block and Ariana Michel, according to the Insider story. The Warriors finished the season 13-11-1 after few wins the year before, according to a Patch season preview. Soccer Oct. 18 The Final Score: Deerfield 1, Vernon Hills 0 Warriors’ Star Performer: Grayson Peacock scored the game’s only goal. Other Notable Warrior Performance: Troy Kayne had six saves while Connor Oriot and Ryan Kaplan assisted with Peacock’s goal. Who’s Next: The Warriors play St. Viator at 11 a.m. Saturday in Vernon Hills for the Regional championship. Sophomore rookies from 2011 become varsity leaders this year as Warriors challenge state’s elite programs.
A youth movement started a year ago by Deerfield High School field hockey Coach Stacy Wood has turned into a young veteran team with a bright future. Last season the Wood promoted seven sophomores to the varsity team. The youngsters gained more experience than victories—the team won three games—but this year that know-how has turned into a winning 10-7 record.
