DHS junior’s one-under par 71 earns crown as rain washes out second round.
Ian Kelsey became Deerfield’s fourth state champion in less than a year today when the Deerfield High School junior shared the 2012 Illinois golf crown with Jack Junge in a rain shortened tournament in Bloomington. Kelsey shot a one-under par 71 Friday in a round that included five birdies, four bogies and nine pars. He was ready to start his final round at 9 a.m. today. DHS golfer finishes first day of competition one under par in two-way first place tie.
Deerfield High School junior golfer Ian Kelsey fired a one-under par 71 today at the Den in Bloomington to end the first day of the State Tournament in a first-place tie with New Trier’s Jack Junge, according to information on the Illinois High School Association website. Kelsey plays another round Saturday with the best 36-hole total determining the state champion. Kelsey finished the opening round with five birdies, four bogies and nine pars. The other Warrior participant, Colin Davis, completed the day in 86th place with an 85. He too competes again Saturday. Oct. 8 The Final Score: There were no team points for Deerfield because only individuals competed. Warriors’ Star Performers: Ian Kelsey and Colin David finished in the top ten to qualify for the State Tournament. Who’s Next: Davis and Kelsey compete in the State Meet Friday and Saturday in Bloomington. The Bottom Line: Kelsey fired a 73 to finish second in a challenging Sectional field three strokes behind Huntley’s Ryan Craig and one ahead of Barrington’s Brad Powell. Davis carded a 79 to end up in a six-way tie for fifth. Ari Marks did not qualify for State. In the girls’ Sectional, Lauren Kelsey was not among the top ten to reach the State Finals. DHS golfers Ian and Lauren Kelsey compete in their respective Sectionals today.
Ian Kelsey is a good big brother to his sister Lauren. Part of the reason both siblings will compete for Deerfield High School’s golf teams today in the Sectional Meet to earn a berth in the State Tournament is the mentoring Ian has given Lauren. Earlier: Kelsey Refuses to Give In Ian competes for the Warrior boys’ team in the Barrington Sectional today while Lauren is the girls’ squad’s lone representative at the Carmel Sectional in Waukegan. Ian began playing the game at 7 and after becoming adept was hooked. “It took a while,” Ian said. “Eventually it grew on me. Once you have one good shot you just want to come back and do it again.” Lauren did not start playing golf until the summer before her freshman year at Deerfield. She is now a …

Sept. 27 The Final Score: Glenbrook North 106, Deerfield 80 Warriors’ Star Performers: Ruby Powell won the 100-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke while Christine Stitcher took the diving competition. Other Notable Warrior Performances: Barbara Brottman earned second place finishes in the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle. Lynn Mallory was second in the 50 freestyle and third in the 100 while Becca Rosenberg was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke. Lauren Kurzydlo grabbed third in the 200 and 500 freestyles.
