Warrior Tennis Team Earns Points at State

Deerfield Tennis and Soccer teams end year in post season play.

Deerfield High School tennis players Jenna Borzak and Jorie Fox gave the Warriors one more point in the Illinois High School Association State Tournament today before bowing out of the meet. The team finished with nine tallies. After dropping their third round match to Maddie Lipp and Christina Zordani of Lake Forest Friday, Borzak and Fox defeated the duo of Anna Mernick and Blair Hollenbeck of Belleville West Friday, 6-4, 6-3, in the fourth consolation round for the squad’s final score of the tourney. Laura Gutierrez and Mia Sullivan of Fenwick High School in Oak Park stopped Borzak and Fox today, 8-3, in the fifth consolation round ending a productive Warrior career. Update: Warriors Earn 3 More State Tennis Points

Borzak- Fox doubles team and Lozovsky each pick up victories and will play again Friday.

(Update at 6:30 p.m.) Deerfield High School’s tennis team picked up three more points today in the State Meet in Buffalo Grove giving it eight for the tournament keeping it just out of the top 10. Warrior doubles tandem Jenna Borzak and Jorie Fox were extended to three sets before winning their second round match against Andrea Goyao and Megan Conlin of Rosary High School in Aurora, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. In the round of 32, Borzak and Fox fell to Maddie Lipp and Christine Zordani of Lake Forest, 6-2, 6-0. They play in the consolation round Friday. In singles, Ariel Lozovsky upended Shanaz Danesdhoost of Carbondale, 6-1, 6-3 moving on to the next round in the consolation bracket Friday. DHS Girls’ tennis team will gather for traditional pre tournament meal before trip to Tournament Central. Four Warriors open play Thursday.

For 252 of the 256 tennis players competing in the Illinois High School Association State Meet, the tournament starts today, but for the four athletes from Deerfield High School it began at Trax Tavern & Grill Wednesday. Mindy Borovsky, Ariel Lozovski, Jorie Fox and Jenna Borzak with gather with Coach Rich Koukal at Trax for what has become a traditional pre-tournament routine before heading to Tournament Central in Buffalo Grove where they checked in Wednesday night. Who’s Next:   Borovsky, Lozovsky, Borzak and Fox compete in the State Finals Thursday through Saturday in Buffalo Grove.  The Bottom Line:      Borovsky breezed through her first three matches in straight sets losing only three games before falling in the final for second place. Intensity Powers Brown’s State Title Drive

Warrior captain keeps focus en route to celebration of title.

A laser like focus on championship tennis was the key ingredient for Jason Brown as the Deerfield High School senior breezed to the state title Saturday with a pair of straight set victories in Arlington Heights. Though the scores indicate Brown had an easy time winning the title match and the semifinal contest 90 minutes before, he increased his concentration at critical points throughout the day to puncture his opponents’ confidence. Update: Warriors’ Brown Wins State Tennis Title

Deerfield finishes fifth in team standings with all points coming from Jason Brown and Toby Ma.

Update (5 p.m., Saturday) Jason Brown breezed to the Illinois state tennis championship today with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Julian Childers of Marion Catholic in the title match helping Deerfield High School finish fifth in the team standings. Before Brown could play for the crown, he had to win his semifinal match earlier today, 6-1, 6-4, over Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central. Brown displayed intense focus throughout both matches. In five games that reached deuce he won the next two points each time to win each game at critical stages of each contest. “He has an unbelievable ability to focus,” Assistant Coach Ryan Johnstone said. Deerfield High School tennis standouts Jason Brown and Toby Ma won their three opening round matches in the State Tournament Thursday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. The top seeded Brown, who placed third last year, stopped Matt Bisbee of Chicago Marist, 7-5, 6-1, in the first round before breezing past Nate Campanile of Grayslake North, 6-0, 6-2. Jason Brown and Toby Ma will try to do for the Deerfield High School tennis team in three days starting Thursday what competitors at Wimbledon have two weeks to accomplish. The Two Warriors carry the team’s hopes into the State Meet Thursday through Saturday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights hoping to improve on their solid finishes a year ago. Brown Tops Ma for Sectional Tennis Title in All Deerfield Match

Both Warriors qualify for State Meet.

Jason Brown defeated Toby Ma for the Sectional tennis singles championship Saturday in what has become an intramural affair for the Deerfield High School tennis team. For the third year in a row the two Warriors met for the title after both had secured a return trip to the State Meet Thursday through Saturday in Arlington Heights. Brown, a senior, topped Ma, a junior, 6-2 in the first set when Ma defaulted after falling behind, 1-0, in the second. “I can’t beat him,” Ma said. “It’s impossible.” With the top four finishers in singles and doubles qualifying for the State Finals, the only suspense left when the semifinals began Saturday was individual accomplishments.
