UPDATE: Bess Named Patch's Athlete of the Week

With more than 8,000 votes cast, see who took this week's honor as Athlete of the Week

After more than 8,000 votes were cast, Deerfield's Artie Bess was named Patch Athlete of the Week making it two weeks in a row for Warriors. Christine Stitcher won the past week. Bess took third place in the 220-pound division at the Class 3A wrestling state championships last weekend. Bess beat Mt. Carmel junior David Denne 3-1 in the third-place match and finished the season with a record of 40-2. He garnered 5,079 votes, or 61 percent. Bess joined a long list of Warriors to share this honor since December including Erin Purdy, Alex Sacks, Michael Alfieri, Chriastine Stitcher and Lenny Bloom. Update: Bess Trails in Athlete of the Week Voting

Warrior wrestler has 1,244 votes but is 282 votes behind

Deerfield High School wrestler Artie Bess, who starred in the State Meet a week ago for the Warriors, is making a strong bid to become Patch’s Athlete of the Week. After taking the third place medal Saturday in the 220-pound weight class, Bess was one of five area athletes nominated. As of midnight today, he has 1,244 of the 3,040 votes cast but trails Loyola Academy basketball player Lauren Kriz, who has 1,526. Bess finished his four-year varsity career with a 40-2 record this season and the third place finish at State. He was also an outside linebacker for the Warrior football team and will now get ready for the lacrosse season. Voters can continue to cast ballots through midnight Saturday.

Bess Ends Career With Third-Place Finish

Deerfield High School senior Artie Bess closed out his high school wrestling career Saturday, taking third place at the State Meet in Champaign. Bess battled Mount Carmel junior David Denne through three rounds to collect the third-place medal. The 220-pound match got underway with both wrestlers refusing to give an inch as the first period with no score. Bess used the second period to put a point on the board, collecting an escape with 1:20 left. The third period is where Bess sealed his victory. Starting the period on top, he prevented Denne from getting an escape and recorded a takedown, pushing his lead to 3-0. Despite allowing an escape to Denne, the crowd was chanting, “Artie, Artie,” as the clock ticked and his third-place win was …

Update: Bess Takes Third in State Meet

Warrior 220 pounder gets medal with 3-1 decision.

(Update at 7:50 p.m. Saturday) Artie Bess grabbed the third place medal at the State Wrestling Meet tonight with a 3-1 decision over David Denne of Mt. Carmel. (Update at 3 p.m. Saturday) Artie Bess defeated Quinton Quarles of Grant in overtime, 2-1, today in the consolation semifinals of the State Wrestling Meet to move into the third place match against David Denne of Mt. Carmel. (Update at Noon Saturday) Artie Bess dropped his championship semifinal Friday night, 7-3, to Josh Marchok of Schaumburg in th3 220-pound weight class of the State Wrestling Meet in Champaign. Update: Bloom, Bess Take Openers

Warrior wrestlers move to Friday’s quarterfinals with opening round victories.

(Update at 10 p.m.) Lenny Bloom and Artie Bess won their opening round matches today in the State Wrestling Tournament to move into Friday’s quarterfinal round. Bess dominated Greg Cameron of Plainfield Central, 12-0, whole Bloom downed Steve Meyers of Plainfield North, 11-5. Bess held a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period, nearly pinned his foe in the second and cradled him twice more in the third for the 12-0 victory. (Earlier at 5:50 a.m.) Wrestling practice at Deerfield High School Tuesday looked like it does any other time of the year even though only two athletes—Artie Bess (220) and Lenny Bloom (145)—are still competing. Bess, Bloom, Stitcher Head Downstate

Warrior wrestlers win Sectional titles, Stitcher qualifies for State Gymnastics Meet, Swimmers take third in league meet and boys’ basketball team stomps Sullivan.

Wrestling  Feb. 11  Warriors Star Performers:   Artie Bess (220) and Lenny Bloom (145) won Sectional championships.  Who’s Next:   Bess and Bloom compete at the State Meet Friday and Saturday in Champaign.  The Bottom Line:      Bess, the third ranked wrestler in the state in his class, ran his record for the season to 36-1. Warrior Wrestlers Seek Team Glory

Deerfield looking to advance individuals, entire meet as post season starts Saturday.

Sending competitors to the State Meet is nothing new for the Deerfield High School wrestling team but the Warriors have something else in mind when they compete in the Stevenson Regional at 9 a.m. Saturday. They want a team title. Wrestling, unlike other sports, separates team and individual competition after the Regionals. The top three individual competitors advance to the Sectional at Barrington Feb. 10 and 11 with the first four there going to the State Meet a week later in Champaign. A year ago, Artie Bess (220), Leonard Bloom (145) and Keven Hoogheem (113) got to the State Finals but as a team the Warriors were done after the initial post season round.
